Does/did your insurance pay for alimentum formula?

DD was just put on this Wednesday and we are hoping our insurance will help pay for it, as WIC will not pay for it even with a letter from our doctor. Any other tips/advice on cutting costs for this??? TIA

Re: Does/did your insurance pay for alimentum formula?

  • Yes! Carefirst has been paying for ours since we were put on it over 6 months ago. You need to find a medical supply company, we called Edgepark, they sent a bunch of paperwork to my pedi (who said she would do what she could to get it covered.) Pedi faxed it back to Edgepark, Edgepark called Carefirst and that was it! Edgepark called us to place our first order and a case was at our doorstep 2 days later. Best part, Carefirst said they would pay 50%, and they ended up paying 100%! Good for us, as Asher will be on it past 1.

If Edgepark doesn't work, call another company. Edgepark was the second company that I got in touch with. The first company couldn't get it approved. So, don't give up, keep at it! Good luck !

  • Yes we were pretty lucky, just have to take a prescription to the pharmacy and have them order it.  Same for our other special formulas (Neocate and vital jr).  It took me a couple hours on the phone to figure out, no one seemed to know anything but well worth the effort. I have also heard of insurances covering it through DME, so if they say no to a prescription you can ask if it is covered under DME.

  • Also, did your LOs have runny poop on the alimentum? Does this get better? or does it mean it's not working? My poor DD hasn't had a solid/formed poop in over 4 weeks.

  • No, we were never able to get insurance to cover Alimentum.

  • not me since i only used one bottle at night and the rest was BM, but my friend did. not due to food allergies but due to colic and that was the only formula her daughter was able to drink.  The insurance declined it at first and then she sent another letter and they approved it.

If you get declined, which is a possibility. Send a letter. and another one. and another one.  just keep sending them letters and fighting it.. it all depends on who you get and who reads your letter and who answers the call -you just need that one compassionate person.

  • We were never able to get our insurance to cover it, even with our pedi working directly with the insurance company. We had Aetna at that point.
