3rd Trimester

bad first tri screening results... looking for experiences

Hi girls,

I am 13 weeks and the doctor just called with the results of my first rimester screening tests.  The ultrasound looked good and the fluid on the spine was in the normal range.  She just said the the blood test came back with a few numbers very low.  Some level of proteins or something were much lower than the normal range.  She said it could be indicitive of any number of things including something wrong with the placenta and blood flow.  She said the next step is a level 2 ultrasound and more bloodwork.  She said they can't do anything before 18 weeks because they wouldn't be able to see enough on the ultrasound before that to get answers.  It is going to kill me to wait 5 weeks for answers.  Did anyone else have 12 week blood work come back with some low numbers?  What ended up coming of it?  Thanks!

  • Without knowing specifically what levels were low it's hard to say.

I had a low PAPP-A level and am considered high-risk. I started weekly u/s's at 28 weeks and continue to have them. So far so good and nothing's come of it.

  • my sister in law had this happen, freaked her out totally until she had the level 2 ultrasound and bloodwork, that's why I didn't even get the early screening, it's so inaccurate and does nothing but scare the (&^^* out of moms.

  • Hey! I would definitely not be too worried about it. I had a low papp-a and freaked out when they told me. Since testing is done at the local children's hospital and my doctors clinic is off site I went to see him to get the low down on what it all actually meant. He told me what he has seen is that the test has basically been debunked and all of the claims of what it could show have been disproved in his mind. He told me everything was fine and not to worry. He said on the plus side I will get to see baby Michael a whole lot since insurance will cover the fetal growth ultrasounds.  I didn't have to get any extra testing and they did not move me to a high risk label either. Good Luck and I would definitely not worry about it!

And when I was doing research it said if you smoke (idk if you do or not but this is just a side note that I found while reading research papers on the test) the "normal" level is much lower that is why they usually ask if you are still smoking and they will add that in when looking over the numbers.
