For those who have used the Rock N Play Sleeper...

The reviews are great and I think this would be a great option for us in the first few months, but I'm worried about the transition into the crib afterwards?

My twins slept in their swings for the first three or four months, and my dd went right into her crib when we decided to transition, but my ds had such a hard time. How did your LO doo when he grew out of the sleeper? Was it a difficult transition?

Another question I have is it seems really low to the ground, we have a fairly high king bed and I wonder how well that will work? Maybe the pic just seems lower?

I plan on breastfeeding so I'm going back and forth about what to do. I know lO will be in our room for quite awhile, even when she moves to the crib because I want her sleeping through the night regularly before we move her in to her big sister's room.

Just need advice about how best to do this!

Re: For those who have used the Rock N Play Sleeper...

  • I did read one interesting amazon review of it, that made me reevaluate how often I would use it.  Before I buy one I want to talk to a dr to see if this really would be a concern for our LO

"I'm a second time mom and recently bought this for my newborn son. I fell in love with it instantly. It's lightweight, portable, and the baby would fall asleep as soon as I would place him in it. My baby napped and slept at night in this sleeper. It worked like a dream, just like all the other reviewers say. We used this product exclusively for sleeping, and it says right on the box - "approved for sleep".

All was great until my son was about 2 mos old. I started to notice that he tended to slump his head to one particular side, and his neck strength was not progressing as well as it should. He also was starting to develop a flat spot on the right side of his head where the sleeper angles inward. You cannot tell from the picture, but this sleeper has a flat hard support underneath the padding. This hard support angles inward all the way up both sides of the sleeper. Because the sleeper is inclined, these angled hard supports provide a place for a newborn to rest his head, either to the right or to the left. These hard supports also cause a newborn's shoulders to slump inward - not great for baby's quickly developing neck and shoulder muscles.

At my son's 2 month check up, he was diagnosed with mild torticollis on his right side(shortened/tight neck muscles) and the beginnings of plagiocephaly (flat head). He is now 3 months old and in weekly physical therapy. We are hoping we won't have to get a helmet. I only used this product for sleep, but for a newborn, that means 14-18 hours per day.

If you do get this product, I would pay special attention to your infant's shoulder, neck and head positioning. Run your fingers along the back of the padding and feel where it is hard and angles inward on either side. Is it pushing in on your child's shoulders? Does your child's head lean over to one side? Use your best judgement. Perhaps occasional use as a seat would be ok, but no baby should spend all their sleeping hours in this contraption. I'm just upset it took us 2 months to figure that out.

Most of the 5 star reviews were written within the first few days or weeks of having the product. It would be interesting to see how many of those same infants are now having neck and head issues...

This is a relatively new product. I honestly believe that they will end up reclassifying it as an infant seat rather than a sleeper. Please be careful, don't make the same mistake we did. "

  • It might be a good thing to post on the 0-3 board or 3-6 board since they've probably used it.  I know it didn't come out until a few months after DS was born and he is one of the youngest older siblings here so I think there will only be a handful of parents who have used this, if any, here.

  • I have several friends who rave about the Rock N Play Sleeper, and it was the number one thing on my registry because of this.  To the OP, they didn't really have any trouble transitioning into a crib...they just slowly weaned their LO's off of it.

As far as the neck/flat head problems, there is a simple fix for this.  Pick up a Boppy "Noggin Nest" and slide it under the lining.  Boom, done. :-)

  • I loved mine.  We have a king size bed & it was a little lower, but not bad.   He slept in it for about 3 months before we transitioned into the crib.  It was a little difficult, but not to bad.  We just raised one side of the mattress up & slowly just kept lowering it. We also had him sleep in his RNP in his room for a couple nights before we actually moved him into his crib.  I know a lot of girls on the 6-9 board (the board I'm usually on) used it.

Which one are you getting?  I'm so in love with the hot pink/brown one with the butterflies I can't stand it!  When I found out I was having a girl, I immediately added it to my registry!
