Yes, do a wash on hot before your first use! You'll also want to dry the shells in the dryer the first time even if you plan on line drying to help laminate the PUL.

Yes - I had to wash the 4.0 3-5 times and the elementals 5-7 times before use.

Without is fine. I've actually thrown one OTB without washing because of an emergency and it did just fine.

I only washed my 3.0's once before use, because I didn't know where they came from (warehouse or whatever).

Since it's microfiber it's not like your washing oils out of natural fibers like hemp or cotton.
