omg - how do I get the smell of vomit out?

This is our first experience with honest-to-goodness VOMIT, and of course it was in the car.  I have the carseat cover in the washing machine, but it somehow got all over the styrofoam and soaked the straps.  I scrubbed the upholstery with a "Mr. Clean"-type product, but the smell remains. . .

Help??!

  • Baking soda can absorb some of the odor.  Try Febreeze too.  Can you keep the doors/windows open for a while to let it air out too?  It sucks.  Barf is just gross.

  • I just cleaned barfed on carpet with vinegar and water, did a water rinse, then soaked it up with a towel.  Once it dried completely I sprinkled with baking soda, let it sit, then vacuumed.  Seemed to do the trick.

  • DD has a horrible gag reflux and has always been a spitter.  Now that she is older, she sometimes forces herself to throw up when she coughs a lot.  I've become a pro at cleaning it out of my car quickly.  They make this natural product called Pure Ayre that works great (we bought it online). We recently ran out and I wasn't paying a ton for shipping, so I just went to a pet store and got a spray that is all natural and safe for animals.  It seemed to have worked just as well.

  • I agree with the others about baking soda. I wiped up everything with damp paper towels then put down a solid coat of baking soda. I read to let it sit several hours or overnight, so we just let it sit until the morning and vacuumed. It got rid of the smell completely.

  • I'm a big fan of Nature's Miracle (original formula).  It's for pet messes, but it did a great job on my nephew's mess when we discovered he gets car sick in the third row of seats in my aunt and uncle's mini-van....  And this was after we did some emergency clean up right after and then it sat in the sun for a whole day at Disneyland... and I mean a hotter than hell day.
