I talked to my RE today. She said that the head of their lab did the ICSI on the eggs and that she thought both the eggs and sperm looked great. After the ICSI was done, the head of the lab thought we would have at least 5 or more out of the 7 fertilize. She was very hopeful. She was so shocked the next day when she looked and saw that none of them fertilized. They are at a total loss as to what is causing this. They are 99% sure it is a sperm issue, but they don't know what it is. (She wished we would have done 1/2 donor and 1/2 DH's this time, just so we could have ruled out completely any egg issues. But since we didn't, there is always the small chance it is an egg issue along with MFI).
So, our options are to use donor sperm and do IUIs, do a donor sperm IVF cycle, or do a 1/2 donor, 1/2 DH IVF w/ ICSI cycle. She recommends doing the donor IUIs if we are willing to use a donor because it is most cost effective since we are OOP.
I am freaked out at the prospect of ever doing IVF again after what happened this time. My RE said there would be a one in a million chance it would happen to me again since I am the first person in their practice to ever have to be transported to the hospital due to abdominal bleeding. However, she doesn't recommend IVF unless we are willing to do at least partial donor.
Not sure what route we will take next. I would be willing to try using a donor. DH not so much. We will take some time and think about it.
Re: WTF Appt
Stacy - I'm so sorry you're left with so many questions. It peeves me that there is still so much up in the air about this process and that it's so hard for them to say if it's an egg/sperm issue without guessing or using the"trial and error" method.
Lots more (HUGS) and I hope you and your DH are able to talk things through and come up with a plan that works for both of you.
It looks like you at least have options. Maybe your DH won't be so resistant if you're going the IUI route instead of the IVF route that landed you in the hospital.
Take all the time you need. GL and let us know what you decide.
Oh Stacy, I'm so sorry you have to deal with all of this. It is a tough thing for a guy to have to swallow, the possibility of using a donor. I know my H's first instinct was to say no. But then after he had time to think about it, he decided it was something he would be okay with, that dna isn't what makes a family. I hope with all my heart that you and your H are able to talk things through and come to an agreement that you are both okay with. ((BIG HUGS)) We are here for you!
If you want to talk about any of this, you can always pm me too! I've been where you are as far as the donor issue goes.
