Success after IF

Weird appt (u/s) today...thoughts?

I had an u/s today because I have them every 4 weeks since I am considered high risk... well I knew something was up because it was a long u/s and she had me turning on my side and stuff.  Saw the midwife next and she tells me the tech couldn't find the right kidney.  She looks back at my 20wk u/s and both kidneys are checked off as ok.  So she looks at the pics and says it appears she didn't see any fluid in the kidney.  Then she tells me it's not a big deal if the baby only has one kidney and that we can look again at my next u/s though.  Then she decides to show it to the Dr though...comes back and tells me to make an appt with MFM for level 2 u/s.  I am sooo confused by everything that just happened.......

Thoughts???  Would you be worried?

  • Well, sure I would be worried.  The best news is that its some kind of a mix up and they're able to find out that your LO has both working kidneys.  I hope that's the case.

If its not, I have a friend whose son had to have his kidney removed at 5 days old (long story that has nothing to do with your situation) and he is a happy healthy 3 year old who only has one kidney.  So it can be done!

I would definitely get my questions answered ASAP, though!

  • I don't know if it would work the same for kidneys, but I had something similar happen where I had an u/s for reasons unrelated to anatomy and got a call the next day where they said they couldn't see the baby's bladder and wanted me to come back for another scan. The bladder was there at the 20 week ultrasound and I asked them to confirm that if it was there before, it's not as if it disappeared, right? They confirmed and said there probably just wasn't any fluid in it, and when I had the follow up u/s all looked ok again. Good luck, hope all turns out ok!

  • I don't know anything about this specific condition so I'm not sure how helpful I can be.  I know I kind of freaked out when we were told at our anatomy scan that our son has a multicystic kidney.  In our case, a nurse called two days after the ultrasound to give me the news and tell me to make an appointment with a peri.  She couldn't answer any of my questions so it was very frustrating to have to wait for the peri appointment to get answers.

For my son, it's not a huge deal, the multicystic kidney is non-functioning, but the other kidney works perfectly.  He won't be allowed to play contact sports when he is older and has to have an ultrasound each year to make sure everything still looks good.  There is a possibility that the bad kidney may need to be removed at some point, but since it didn't happen in the first year it is very unlikely now.  All that really matters at this point is that the good kidney keeps functioning like it should.

I know it's stressful, but I hope you are able to get answers soon.  Good luck with your next ultrasound!

It took 3 1/2 long years, but we finally got our little miracle!

  • A co-worker of mine's son was born with one kidney and he is fine!  He has had no complications and it a totally normal, rambuncious 7 year old.
