The sizing. They are wider than standard prefolds so they're easier to snappi and they also have lots of different sizes in length so you don't have as much bulk folding them down.
I think Imagines and Zabi Baby also have sized prefolds similar to GMD now but they used to be the only ones.
And like a pp said, they are incredibly absorbent.
Meh. GMD tells me to buy Bummis, so I doubt they're magic. I do have GMD infant fitteds, and they're fine - but it's still just cotton.
Off topic but what has been your experience with Bummis? I have several of the covers, mostly in S-L and I'm trying to decide if I want to purchase some NB Super Brites or go with the Thirsties Duo Wrap Size 1 (I see from your siggy that's what LO is wearing).

For prefolds, I ended up buying rearz, but I mostly use the GMD infant fitteds because we like velcro. I don't really think you can go too wrong with prefolds; GMD are good, but Little Lions get good reviews, too, and my Rearz have been fine. The only bad things I've heard are about Gerber.
For covers, I've just got 3 Bummis SWW in Newborn (and 3 in small he should be in soon) and 3 Thirsties Duos. The Duos are fine size-wise, but I really don't like snaps for now and DH never uses the Duos because of the snaps. The Duos will definitely fit a long time, though, and I think they're cuter. My BSWW are just plain white.
DS also had no problem with covers going over his umbilical stump, so we've just used those covers from day 1 (well, day 2 after we got home).

That's extremely helpful, thank you. I have a few short weeks to decide, but I think I'll end up going with the Duo Wraps using GMD prefolds and then add in a few WAHM and GMD fitteds for the first few weeks.

This is exactly what I am doing with the baby. I also have some lil joyes and XS BG AIOs for out and about.

We use them as our backup diapers on DS, usually snappied with no cover around the house. They are soft, absorbant and well sized. They work well and he seems happy in them.
We're planning to use duo wraps with GMD prefolds for the new baby. I got the yellow edge in the mail yesterday and picked up 8 duos size 1 for $50 from Craigslist!
I also have and LOVE their Sherpa prefolds. They don't snappi well with the material, but are super soft and stretchy. I'm actually starting to make them into trainers for DS.
