Babies: 3 - 6 Months

Which bug repellent for baby?

I just researched information on bug repellents for baby and found (on babycenter.com) that the CDC recommends using something with no more than 30% DEET/ or Picaridin since the natural lemon eucalyptus isn't recommended until age 3.  AAP says bug repellent is ok after 2 months of age.

But when I go online to find a baby-friendly bug repellent all the ones that seem to be baby-friendly specifically say DEET-free and do contain lemon and eucalyptus when I check the ingredients.

Of course, I'll have to do more research but I know there are some skin experts out there who may have a quick answer.  What bug repellent should I use for my 5 month old?

TIA!

Re: Which bug repellent for baby?

  • I was told by my pedi that you shouldn't use bug repellant on a baby younger then 6 months and the same goes for sunscreen. He did say that once DS is 6 months old to use something like the Off Skintastic brand...he said the wipes are the best.

  • We use long clothes for now. After LO is 6 months I'll use the same thing I use on myself: long, light clothing (like linen) and  All Terrain spray, which is herbal.  Also, here is a great resource for checking out products for ingredients and related concerns): https://www.ewg.org/skindeep/search.php?query=insect+repellent (though it sounds like you are already a great researcher).

  • Thank you both.  I think I settled on the OFF PowerPad Lamp so not a spray or lotion to put on baby's skin at all.  Right now I'm only concerned about mosuitos since I'm not taking him anywhere where he's likely to get bitten by a tick or anything like that.  It got great reviews on Amazon and covers a 10'-15' radius so I'll just keep it by him.  This should do for the next month until I can get something to put on his skin.  I'll look into the ones you each mentioned.  Thanks again.

  • The Off Powerpad Lamp works great...we use them on our front porch where we spend most nights in the summer hanging out...they are awesome
