omaha steaks?

Dh is on a high protein diet. Therefore I am too. I just saw an ad for Omaha steaks and wondered what others' experience has been.

We do tend to eat a lot of steak, so is this a cost effective route or not really? How is the quality? We love corn fed beef.  lol (I know that's supposedly bad.)

I have heard mixed reviews. I have friends who swear by it, but my parents, who tend to like higher quality meat thought it was terrible.

  • It is pricey IMO. They are packaged well, so they store well.  Quality is always good.  If it is a "sale", I would say go for it.  :)

  • I don't remember it being all that cost effective, but we never bought in bulk there. But, we used to get some really tasty steaks there! We don't have one near us now so it's been a long time. They also have yummy twice baked potatoes.

  • I find them to be a great value! We love good steak and think they are pretty good. Be warned, once you buy, they will hound you for life with sales calls.

  • I think anything frozen is going to suffer in quality just a bit but that being said I like them.  (and I think their process of freezing is much better than just putting a steak you forgot to cook in time in the freezer in its original packaging) We have friends that swear by OS.  I actually buy from a similar place and love that I have a variety of steaks and burgers at home at any time.  DH thinks I end up spending more money but to me it is worth it to have a stocked freezer that I can just pull out a sirloin to defrost and cook if I want.  I wouldn't by 18 pounds of filets, t-bones, burgers, etc. at the grocery store just to end up freezing.

  • I don't eat meat, but I ate a ton of them when I did (I'm from Omaha) and I can tell you they are phenomenal.  As with all steaks, it all depends on the cut.  Some are just not as good as others, no matter how how the quality.  They also have tons of chicken, pork, seafood, and side entrees too.  Watch for sales, they have them quite often and deeply discounted.  Once you buy from them once, they will always email you with coupons and whatnot for great deals.

  • I like them and we occasionally buy from there.  But if you have enough storage to do a large deal with them consider getting a half cow or 1/4 cow -- that will always be cheaper and probably better.  We have been looking into splitting a half cow with another family that is getting a chest freezer and I cannot wait for that.

  • Also from Omaha (which I am sure you already knew) and we love Omaha Steaks. We don't buy them that often but try to catch them on a sale. Also since we are local, when you go to our minor league ball games, they serve Omaha Steak Burgers. They are super yummy!!!

  • Hi!  I am a food/meat scientist and love Omaha Steaks, they are a great company with really tasty products, for the product, the price is not bad but big picture I don't consider it economical for day-to-day eating.  Omaha's quality is top notch, usually high choice or prime from a USDAQuality Grade perspective, meaning animals are young and the meat has a lot of internal flecks of fat.  The quality from a flavor perspective is also really high/good, just not part of the USDA Quality Grade.

If you are looking for cost effective ways to purchase beef I suggest trying to find someone local (Iowa is a great place for this) to purchase 1/4 or 1/2 of a steer or heifer from.  Most Iowa farmers raise corn fed beef, which I also love and its really not that much different from grass fed beef from a nutritional standpoint.  If you ever want any help with picking out cuts, understanding grades, verifying a farmer knows what they are talking about, etc. feel free to ask here or send me a PM.

  • It never occurred to me to just buy 1/2 a cow. We have a deep freeze just begging for beef and a food saver begging to be used.  :)
