Okay so Ava is on Zantac (.8ml 3x/day) for her reflux. She is also on Similac Sensitive. She seems to be doing fine during feedings (no screaming, arching back and she finishes her bottles). However she does spit up a lot. I'm wondering if her meds need to be changed (like to Prevacid) or if she is just a mega-spitter-upper. Also, all this spitting up has part of me wondering if she is getting the proper nutrition. I think she is cause it's not like she acts hungry an hour later- she goes 3- 3 1/2 hours between feeds.
So should I call her Pedi and mention the massive spit up amounts or keep an eye on it for now? She doesn't go back until July 26 for her 4 month so I'm wondering if I should address this before then.
Re: Spit up question
As long as she doesn't seem like she's in pain from the reflux, she might just be a spitty kid. Jacob spit up all.the.time. Even when he was Ava's age. Certainly if she becomes uncomfortable then I would call the pedi. She's probably not spitting up as much of the formula as you think since it gets mixed in with other things before it comes up.
Keep in mind that Zantac (and Prevacid, if you switch) are based on weight. So, if she's growing and not getting her dosage adjusted she might become uncomfortable.
Thanks. Yeah I knew about the weight/dosage thing. I'll keep an eye on her and if she starts getting uncomfortable I will call them and see about changing the dose to match her current weight.
How much is she spitting up? Is she gaining weight ok?
I think all the meds do is help keep them comfortable when they spit (reduce the acid). They don't stop the reflux, so I doubt changing or increasing the meds would have a difference. Andrew's been spitting up a lot more since he's been more mobile, and my doctor said it was a laundry problem, not a dosage problem. LOL!
If she doesn't seem in pain, I'd just keep an eye out. We used to hold Andrew for about 20 - 30 minutes after each feed to keep it all down. And have lots of burp cloths handy!
Same here. Hayden would projectile spit. We switched to Enfamil AR to help (which it did a little) but he still spit until he went off of formula at a year.
