When to use Tylenol?

DD has been sick all day and hasn't had a temp under 100.5 even with Tylenol. At what temp do you start using Tylenol? I'm trying to figure out if I should give her more before she goes down. Her temp is currently 100.8. TIA!

Re: When to use Tylenol?

  • Well you don't *need* to use it at 100.8... even up to 102 they say it's a productive fever in that it's fighting off whatever is going on.   However, I feel like if they dont' feel well and are uncomfortable, I have no problem giving it to ease some of the discomfort so they can sleep a little better.  Plus, having a fever just makes me feel yucky, so I want it down.  And, I don't want it to spike while they're asleep.   I usually alternate tylenol and motrin and make sure to do motrin right before bed because it lasts longer than tylenol.  And I feel like motrin works better in general for my kids.

  • At that temp I wouldn't medicate, because the fever is serving a purpose and is not crazy high. I like to let the fever do its work unless it's keeping DS from drinking or sleeping or he is miserable.

If you do want to bring it down, I agree with Jill, Motrin has been way more effective than Tylenol for us.

  • I have a 102 rule in my house. If it isn't 102 or higher we let it ride.
