Anyone's child have to have adnoids removed?

DS' pedi suggested we might have to do this for him at his 2yr checkup. He snores like a buzzsaw and seems to have trouble breathing while he sleeps. MH had his removed at 8 and said it was horrible.

Consults aren't until July. It's going to be a long month.

Re: Anyone's child have to have adnoids removed?

  • My adnoids and tonsils were removed when I was 3 or 4. I only remember the ice cream. ;-)  Do it when he's too young to remember the trauma of surgery.

  • DS #1 had his removed and tubes placed in his hears back in  February, he had a lot of problem with snoring and build up fluids in his hears, he was back to normal within 3 days, it really was not that bad at all.
  • My son almost got his removed.  Doctor said to put a humidifier in his room because his room was probably to dry. Worked like a charm!  We have one that stands in the corner of his room and we turn it on when he's napping and at bedtime.

I had mine removed when i was 5 along with my tonsils too.  Not a big deal, so my Mom tells me.  She said i came out just fine.  : )

  • DD had her tonsils and adenoids removed and a 2nd set of tubes put in when she was 3.  She was ouchy for 3 days then just fine.  She had been not able to sleep deeply because she'd stop breathing and wake herself up over and over, but after they were removed she's had no trouble breathing and has slept great since.  Taking them out changed her voice too!

DD had hers removed at 2.5.  Piece of cake!  She had a second set of tubes and an adenoidectomy and other than being wigged out by the IV they put in while she was asleep, she was totally fine.  Within 15 minutes of being home, she was bouncing on the couch yelling "popsicle! popsicle!"  The tonsils are the really bad recovery.  But the adenoidectomy, she was back in daycare the next day.  I did prep her a bit with stories like Franklin Goes to the Hospital and Little Critter Goes to the Hospital.  Different ailments but reminded her of what she would see -- gowns, masks, funny smells, etc.  We also brought lots of things to do, including our portable DVD player.

  • Ditto everyone else.  DS had his removed in Dec along with his umbilical hernia repair.  He was fine by that night.  He only complained about his belly button, but part of me wonders if that is because he could see it.  DS2 is having his removed along with tubes on Monday.

  • Did your kids stay overnight for observation or did you go home that day?

  • Ds had his out at 18 mnths. He had a horrible time in recovery and I had to be persistent to get him more pain meds. After that he was fine. He laid around for a day and was his wild self within 2 days. He went home about 3 hours after his surgery.

same day.  They kept her overnight for the tonsillectomy but there can be more complications with that.

  • Thought i would update since my youngest had it done Monday.  It was really easy.  He was in our room again in an hour.  He slept most of the day and night.  Today he is burning off that energy he stored up yesterday.  Almost wish I sent him to DC.
