Being around someone with mono?

A friend and I are supposed to get together next week and she just told me she has mono.  She said she is fine to be around me because her doctor released her to go to work and she works with small children.  I'm not sure I believe her...anyone with any experience with this?  I am going to call the doctor tomorrow, but just wondering if any of you have any insight?  :)

Re: Being around someone with mono?

  • If she has been released to go back to work, then I would think that her mono is now "inactive". I had mono when I was 20. I wasn't permitted to return to work for several weeks because I was still symptomatic. I was released to return essentially after my blood work showed that it was inactive. Mono isn't really like a cold or anything. You won't catch it just by being near her. However, if you have any doubts, I wouldn't go. Mono is awful for anyone, but I'm sure it could be really bad for a pregnant person.

  • I don't care what they say, I would NEVER go around someone with mono.  I'm crazy though and I won't even go around people with a cold.  Being sick while pregnant SUCKS, not to mention dangerous.

  • When I had mono I had it for around 2 months. I was out of school for 2 weeks because I was too sick to get out of bed. That said, it takes a lot to get mono, surprisingly, and casual contact isn't enough. If you are worried though, wait another week or two.

  • aren't like 90% of cases spread through saliva?  so as long as you aren't making out or sharing drinks, i'd think you'd be ok.  I don't think you can get it just from standing beside her.  My college roommate had it when we lived in a 8x8 dorm room and I didn't get sick.

Just don't touch anything. You can't get it from being in her presence, but don't share food or drinks (not that you would). I had mono at 30- ugh. And, I was released to work too- so it isn't contagious except through very close contact.

I would still call the doc though, just for peace of mind.

  • You can't get mono just from hanging out with someone who has it.  Like pp said, it's typically spread by saliva or another bodily fluid like sweat.  I'm surprised she feels well enough to go out - I know when I had it, I was out of school for 2 months and felt like death pretty much the entire time.

When I was sick I walked freely around my house with the other 5 members of my family and none of them got sick.

  • I was just with a girlfriend with mono last weekend.  She'd had it for 3 weeks and her doctor had cleared her to be around people.  So I figured it was ok.  Some of my other friends tried sips of her beer - which is something I would not have done, pregnant or not.
