Can anyone tell me what Kansas City is like?

DH is going to Kansas City next month for work for a few weeks.  Since he will be staying right in downtown, I am considering taking the boys and visiting him for a while.  I have never been there though, so I'm curious if there is a lot to do in the area with my boys and since DH will be working during the day, just me.  Will I be bored after  a day or two?  Any recommendations?

Re: Can anyone tell me what Kansas City is like?

  • OMG.  When??  I would LOVE to come meet up with you. :D

Will he be staying on the plaza?

There is some cool stuff to do.  Look at Deanna Rose Farmstead (really cheap during the week), Crayola cafe on the plaza, Worlds of Fun (camp snoopy), zoo, etc.

There is a park near the plaza.   LOTS of fountains to play in (FREE) at the plaza.

  • I haven't been in years and I was in college at the time, so I was mostly concerned with the bar scene ;). Worlds of Fun amusement and water park is there, a Royals game, and downtown has shopping. I'm sure the girls from that side of the state would have more suggestions though.

  • Oh, yea!  Royals games, Tbonez games, TRex cafe (at the legends), cabelas, bass pro, Paradise park.

He doesn't have exact dates yet, but he thinks sometime next month.  He is actually there right now for a meeting, so I will find out the hotel when I talk to him later.  He just said it is right by the ball park.  Is that on the plaza?

Yes, if we go, I would LOVE to meet up too!  I'll keep you posted.

Thanks!  If I was without kids, I would want to know all about the bar scene!  Is there just thing as a kid friendly bar? Wink

I think catching a Royals game would be so much fun!  Don't the park have that cool outfield wall?  Left field, I think?

  • As in the Royals/ Chiefs complex?

depends what you consider down town in Kansas city.  LOL.

June is actually not too busy, so if you hit a weekend, let me know! :D  Or even a week day!

  • We live within driving distance and love going for long weekends.  There's tons to do there.  We just looked into a trip there this summer, so I've done some research recently.

    Some ideas:

    -Royals baseball game

-T Rex Cafe and shopping at Legends

-Hallmark/Crayola thing, Kaleidoscope & Rainforest Adventure Exhibit at Crown Center

-Worlds of Fun/Oceans of Fun (you could easily do a day at each)

-Deanna Rose Children's Farmstead (near KC, but not right in the city)

I can't speak to their zoo, but you could always drive three hours and hit up the Omaha Zoo, which is amazing and is one of the top 10 US zoos.  My boys and I would meet up with you there.  ;)

  • We always go the Deanna Rose Farmstead everytime we are in KC. ?We also love Schlitterbahn Waterpark which is out by The Legends. ?Great shopping there.

We normally go to each of those locations a couple of times a year.
Union Station Science City is near Crown Center. ?

I have no idea.  He just said a few blocks from the baseball park.  Is that not downtown?  Is it a bad area?  I know nothing about Kansas City!  Except that it will be hot, most likely.

I think it will definitely be July or maybe even August since they tend to run late and not early on their jobs.

Great list, thanks!  I'm off to google the Children's Farmstead.  I'd love to meet up too if we make it up that way.

They like anything they don't have to be quiet doing. :)

They love being outside and water, in particular.  They also like music, cars, animals.

  • I love KC!  We'll be there in July (for our anniversary) and the weekend of September 11th.  I can't wait.
  • Definitely hit up Deanna Rose Farmstead with the kids it is fantastic and the zoo is pretty decent too. There's a new polar bear exhibit that was awesome and the kids LOVED it. Check when you know the dates and it may be a weekend where they do the fun run at the Royals game where the kids get to run the bases after the game. Have fun, I've lived here my whole life and love it!
