Food Allergy

Daycare and Nut Reaction

Today we rushed our 20 month old from daycare to the ER after he blew up from what they said "was something that got lodged in his eye". The doctor ruled out pink eye and said right away it?s a reaction from his severe nut allergy. I was so mad at daycare, but what can we do? My husband wants to keep him out for another day and have them scrub down the place and check all food that comes into the school. Does anyone have a strategy that they use for working with daycare to combat any future issues. This is the third reaction at school in the last 4 months. Thanks in advance!

Re: Daycare and Nut Reaction

  • With 3 reactions in 4 months, I'd be switching daycares.  They are obviously not taking the appropriate precautions if one child has had that many reactions in such a short period.  I'm sorry this is happening, you must be so frustrated.  Look for a daycare that will take his safety more seriously.

  • I agree with PP.  I would be switching daycares tomorrow or looking for in-home care.  That is scary.

I agree. I would be looking for another childcare arraignment.

I would definitely switch daycares with it happening that many times.  DS was in a nut free daycare center and he had a reaction once.  Parents could bring in food things for parties and he ended up getting something with peanuts in it.  After that though, they were a lot more strict and careful about it and it didn't happen again.  I wouldn't be able to trust that daycare with my child's life anymore.

Is it suppose to be a nut free day care?  that's sad and they are playing with fire.

if changing schools is not possible, I would also make a big stink about his allergies. Talk to the supervisor and politely ask her if it's ok if you could talk to all the staff and bring in a dvd.  So perhaps show them couple of videos about food allergies and the epi pen video and have a heart to heart with all of them.

  • I agree about looking for a new daycare, with such severe reactions I wouldn't test my child's fate there, accidents happen, but too many incidents have occurred....

  • Absolutely switch.  That is way too many reactions in such a short period of time.
