dilation or effacement better predictors?

I realize that there isn't any golden way to predict when labor will come (or at least that's what I'm assuming :o))    My SIL got all pumped that I was about 50% effaced...only  finger tip dilated...but head is really low.

Just wondering if you gals knew if one was a better predictor than the other.  Then again my doc told me she had a patient walk around for weeks 4cm dilated, thinking she would go into labor any day! I would have died!

  • My OB told me today that they don't really know EXACTLY what causes labor to begin. The reining theory is that there is a chemical released by baby's pituitary gland when baby is ready that begins the process...I was a bit sad to hear that as I'm 4cm dilated and 50% effaced. I could go tonight or next week or the week after...Stick out tongue

  • My understanding from my classes was that there is a chemical released that begins labor.  She didn't say anything about if dilation or effacement was a predictor.  I think the bottom line is that just because one person walked around 4cm dilated and 90% effaced doesn't mean you will and just because another person went into labor at only 2cm dilated and 40% effaced doesn't mean you will either.  Everyone's body is different and even the same person can have a different experience with each pregnancy.
