10 week old not tracking objects with eyes????

My 10 week old does not track toys yet. She makes very little eye contact, but mostly looks past us. She is obsessed with the ceiling fan, so I know that she can see. When I move a toy across her face she does not follow it.

Does you baby follow a toy if you move it across her face? Maybe I am doing something wrong. How do you know if baby is tracking objects.

2 month appointment is tomorrow.

  • Our ped said tracking should occur more with lights than with toys, does your LO track lights?

  • Not sure.

I will try tonight with a small flashlight.

    Thanks!!

  • My LO definitely tracks objects because she will turn her head to follow us as we walk out of a room. However, she is VERY lazy when it comes to toys and doesn't follow them most of the time. We bought this:

and she LOVES to watch the lights flicker.

This is our LO, too. He turns his head to look at us if he hears us talking, but he doesn't "track" his toys with his eyes.

I'm going to try the light thing.

  • My DD tracks pretty well, but she's at her best with eye contact during that quiet awake time which is usually not extraordinarily long in duration.  Other times of the day she is not quite as cooperative with tracking, big grins, etc.  To "test" her, I usually hold a toy about a foot from her face and move it around her field of vision to make her look left, right, up and down.  She usually humors me for a little bit but then gets bored and quits.
  • My first and now this one love staring at NOTHING. I was really nervous but this is apparently par for the course.  My doctor told me at my 2-month appt yesterday that he expects following and smiling by 4 months.  FYI All children love ceiling fans, I actually use this to my advantage now we visit the ceiling fan and the mini-blinds (another favorite of DS#2) and other things with stripes/lines.

That said, if you are concerned ask the Ped...that is what s/he is there for.

  • At our appointment today we discussed tracking. DS will track if he's sitting up right, if he's laying on his side he doesn't track as well. The doctor explained that the neurological system isn't advanced enough and a difference in bodily position effects tracking so you may want to try different positions for your LO.
