Food Allergy

Babies with MPI not MSPI...

MY LO was diagnosed with MSPI and I have cut out diary and soy from my diet.  He gets about 1/3 formula and 2/3 breastmilk.  I have been eating some foods with soy and there doesn't seem to be a problem.  I was wondering if anyone else had success with soy formula instead of nutramigen or alimentum?  I would love to not have to pay the price of those formulas, but of course and willing to if that is what LO tolerates the best.  Thanks!

Re: Babies with MPI not MSPI...

  • if she has MSPI i would NOT use soy formula. I know it's pricy and it sucks, hopefully someone else will suggest something cheaper that's not soy or milk -if there is such a thing.

Also -just a suggestion. My friend had her Alimentum formula paid by her insurance - 100% of it.  Her DD had terrible reflux and alimentum was the only thing that worked. They declined her first request and she sent them a lettter and they approved it.  So if it means you writing 10 letters - do it.  Hopefully it will get to the right hands and your insurance will expense the formula.  After all, if you can't afford it and give her soy formula and she ends up in the hospital -it will cost the insurance a LOT more money.

  • Thanks for the advice, we can afford the alimentum, but it would be nice to know if he could toelrate the soy based formula as well.  :)

    gottcha..

is MSPI an allergy to milk and soy or is it just an intolerance? I know it stands for milk soy protein intolerance.. but is it also an allergy?  I would be worried to give her soy if she's already intolerant to it b/c that might create a full allergy to soy .

  • I think it is just an intolerance at this point but o don't think that he has a problem with soy. I have been eating some soy and I pump and he seems to be fine with the milk...but I definitely do not want to give him a full blown allergy.

  • I know it's common to be both sensitive to soy and milk protein but I think it's 30-50%. My ds was only sensitive to milk proteins. I ebf, but ate lots of soy while nursing without a problem. But the moment I had even a bite of something with hidden dairy (bread, crackers etc) he would immediately have a rash. I would give it a try and see how it goes. You will probably know pretty quickly if there is a problem. And usually a mspi doesn't turn into a true allergy. (it can but it's not common)..,more likely to become lactose intolerance.
