? on natural m/c

What should I expect? There was a blighted ovum and I should have been 8 weeks today. I'm really wanting to let nature take it's course, but a friend just pointed out that a natural m/c can be brutal. What have been your experiences?

I think it is really hard to say because obviously it is different with each person, but since you asked, here are my experiences. I have had 3 m/c's.

The first ended naturally, but I was only 4.5 weeks. I felt very, very sick and was in a lot of pain (I thought I was having an ectopic PG....). It was over quickly though.

My 3rd m/c was around 8 weeks as well. I started spotting on a Thursday and was having bad cramping. Went in for an u/s where we saw the h/b and though everything was going to be okay. The next day......still just light spotting and mild cramping (on Friday....). Saturday during the day....same thing. Saturday night....woke up in excruciating pain and was passing clots the size of golf balls for several hours. Finally went to ER, felt dizzy, sick and was in a lot of pain. I was crying during the u/s because I was in so much pain and I was still passing tons of clots and bleeding heavily. At that point, they said I could have a D&C....and that is what I did.

For me, "natural" m/c's have not been easy. I was in a ton of pain both times and bled a lot. But, I know there are girls on here who have had it easier.

    GL with your decision.

  • I am so sorry for your loss.

I had two natural m/c's - one at around 6w2d and the other was a blighted ovum discovered at about 7.5 weeks.

My B.O. wasn't too painful, just mild - moderate period cramps that lasted for two or three days.  The bleeding however, last a few weeks  - just spotting mostly.

My other one was more painful - I passed the sac and that was really painful but the pain only lasted a day and the bleeding was also much shorter, maybe a few days?

I'm sorry that you have to go through this.

I had a blighted ovum as well... it was not too bad physically.  I had heavy cramping but nothing more than I would feel during a bad period.  You can take some Motrin to help too.  I bled for probably close to 2 weeks but mostly spotting...the heavier bleeding was not that long...maybe 4 days.  From my experience it is definitely something you can handle... it is hard just waiting around for it to happen though.  I am very sorry you have to go through this :(  Best of luck to you.....

  • I had a natural m/c at 5w 4d.  I hadn't had any u/s, so I never knew why it happened, nor when the pregnancy was no longer viable.  I just started spotting one day, and bleeding the next.  For me, it honestly wasn't that bad.  The bleeding was maybe a tad heavier than a period.  And I had minimal cramping.  I was more exhausted than anything else - and most of that was probably due to emotion.

I hope your experience isn't too bad.

ETA:  I also bled no longer than a regular period.

My first one was very early and it was like a bad period.  My second was twins around 6 weeks and it was quite painful for the first day.  The pain and then immediate gush of blood was the first indication that anything was wrong.  I had just had an u/s the day before and things look fine.  That initial pain was so bad I doubled over and could not walk myself out of work.  That passed within 20 minutes I'd say and then it was more of a severe period cramping.

I think popped some Tylenol 3s for that one.

    I'm sorry :(

  • I am so sorry for your loss.

I had an early one - around 5.5 weeks - and the cramping was pretty bad, but definitely manageable.  I stayed on my couch for a couple of days, but the second day was probably more for emotional comfort than physical.

Even though a natural m/c can be really hard, a d&c is still surgery so it won't be easy.  I would go with what your gut is telling you; you can always change your mind if it's too difficult.

    Take care of yourself.

  • I am very sorry for your loss.  I had a misssed mc discovered around 9 weeks and took misoprostol (cytotec) to jump start the natural mc.

I wound up having to take two doses of it and it was definitely difficult to handle.  It wasn't the pain so much but I passed a lot of very large clots over a 24 hour period. While I could handle it emotionally it was hard and a lot of people wouldn't want to go through it.

If I had a LO at home, I might have opted for the d&c because I spent a lot of time running to the bathroom.

I am so sorry that you are going through this. Know that whatever you chose is right for you and your family.

It really depends from case to case. I had a natural m/c at a little over 6 weeks and, while I am glad that nature tooks it course, I didn't have much choice in it. Physically, it wasn't very painful. I had some cramping but nothing major. Emotionally it was tough to have the physical reminder everytime I used the bathroom. I started spotting on a Tuesday, bleeding Thursday, and was done by the following Monday.

  • I didn't miscarry naturally with my blighted ovum mainly because I was told my body could think it was pregnant for many weeks until finally miscarrying and I didn't have the patience for it.  However I was given the option of delaying the d&c so I think you could decide that you want the d&c if it gets to be too long for you to handle of if you miscarry and it doesn't seem to be going easily.  You shouldn't need to make that decision today.  I think how bad it is depends on how long your body continues to prepare for the pregnancy and when you start to miscarry.  Hang in there girl.  So very sorry.
