I'm not sure of the best place to post this question so I apologize if it seems really random! Here's the situation:
DH and I decided that we wanted to give DS a hypenated last name (even though we're married, I'm keeping my last name). So legally he has DH's-My last namr. After 17 months we've decided that the hypen just doesn't fit and we want to legally delete my last name from DS's name and just keep DH's name.
We just can't get a straight answer on whether this will require a court petition or a more simple name ammendment form. Any info will be much appreciated! TIA.
Re: Has anyone tried to legally remove a name from a hypenated name?
I did a quick google search. Most of what comes up is people asking about changing their childs name after they have been divorced and it gets sticky. I don't know, but I had a similar hypothetical conversation with my sister in law this past weekend. (It wasn't about hyphonated names but last names in general or changing from maiden to married etc...). From our conversation, at least in our state, you would need to petition a judge to hear your 'case'. You can't simply go down to social security and fill out a name change form. Since you are married to your H and you both agree on this it shouldn't be too difficult (you won't be fighting anyone) but I think you n eed to go through the courts to do this. Try some more googling. I only clicked the first few links. If nothing turns up there call and ask the court.
