LOVE him!
How fun - I'm a mythology nerd Hermione: Greek
ETA: Hermione was also a character in Shakespeare's play "The Winter's Tale"
Challenge accepted!
I have always loved the name of Minerva, the Roman version of the Greek goddess Athena. I wouldn't have the guts to name a kid that, but I still think it's a lovely mix of strength and beauty.
Although I could never use the names for a child, Aztec/Nahuatl mythology interests me. This is my favorite.

Daphne!
Oh, fun! I want to play this round.
Indira: Hindu Goddess of wealth, and Sanskrit word for beauty.
Fun!
Gender: Feminine
Usage: English (Rare), German, Celtic Mythology
Pronounced: i-ZOL-d? (English), i-SOL-d? (English), ee-ZAWL-du (German) [key]
In Arthurian legend she was an Irish princess betrothed to King Mark of Cornwall. She became the lover of his knight Tristan, which led to their tragic deaths. The story was popular during the Middle Ages and the name became relatively common in England at that time. It was rare by the 19th century, though some interest was generated by Richard Wagner's opera 'Tristan und Isolde' (1865).

Mine is Diana! If my DS (Dominic) would have been a girl the name would have been Diana (I have an aunt who is Dianna) (actually the name would been: Diana Sofia Maria VeryItalianLastName)
Diana (lt. "heavenly" or "divine") was the goddess of the hunt, being associated with wild animals and woodland, and has the power to talk to and control animals and also of the moon in Roman mythology. In literature she was the equal of the Greek goddess Artemis, though in cult beliefs she was Italic, not Greek, in origin. Diana was worshiped in ancient Roman religion and is currently revered in Roman Neopaganism and Stregheria. Dianic Wicca, a largely feminist form of the practice, is named for her. Diana was known to be the virgin goddess and looked after virgins and women. She was one of the three maiden goddesses, Diana, Minerva and Vesta, who swore never to marry.
Along with her main attributes, Diana was an emblem of chastity. Oak groves were especially sacred to her. According to mythology, Diana was born with her twin brother Apollo on the island of Delos, daughter of Jupiter and Latona. Diana made up a triad with two other Roman deities: Egeria the water nymph, her servant and assistant midwife; and Virbius, the woodland god. (from wikipedia)
I absolutely love mythology. I also love names like Astrid (which is my all time guilty pleasure name) and Delphina (from the island of Delphi) so this was extremely difficult for me to pick just one name to use. Camilla and Daphne are on my short list but I went with something a little off the beaten path. I wanted to use a name I would love to use but couldn't, so I picked Freyja.
From Old Norse Freyja meaning "lady". This is the name of the goddess of love and beauty in Norse mythology. She claimed half of the heroes who were slain in battle and brought them to her realm in Asgard.
I picked:
Irene: The Greek personified goddess of peace and wealth. Irene was portrayed as a young woman with a cornucopia, scepter, and torch or rhyton. She is one of the Horae. Famous is the marble statue of Cephisodotus (ca. 380 BCE), which shows Irene with Plutus on her arm.
Oh I like this one! Love Greek mythology names, I chose Eris:
ERIS was the goddess or spirit (daimona) of strife, discord, contention and rivalry. She was often represented specifically as the daimon of the strife of war, who haunted the battlefield and delighted in human bloodshed.
Because of Eris' disagreeable nature she was the only goddess not to be invited to the wedding of Peleus and Thetis. When she turned up anyway, she was refused admittance and, in a rage, threw a golden apple amongst the goddesses inscribed "To the fairest." Three goddesses laid claim it, and in their rivalry brought about the events which led to the Trojan War.
Eris was closely identified with the war-goddess Enyo. Indeed Homer uses the names interchangeably. Her Roman name was Discordia.
I'll play...
I chose Xanthe because Archer was going to be Xanthe if it weren't for that pesky external genitalia.
XANTHE Gender: Feminine Usage: Greek Mythology, Ancient Greek Other Scripts: ?a??? (Ancient Greek) Derived from Greek ?a???? (xanthos) meaning "yellow" or "fair hair". This was the name of a few minor figures in Greek mythology.Well that's funny - turns out Victoria is the Roman goddess of victory. But since that would be too easy, I'll say Persephone. I love to say this name aloud, and the story is pretty good too.
Basically Hades abducted her, stuff died off, and Zeus and Hades worked out a deal where she would only spend one-third of the year in Hades kingdom. Got to love the deal makers in these myths.

I've always loved Aphrodite, the Greek goddess of love. My dog is named Aphrodite (Ditie for short). I always wanted to get a male dog as well and name him Hephaestus, her husband, the God of Iron (and call him Hephy)
.
Aphrodite was married to Hephaestus but had an affair with Ares (and in some versions they are half brother and sister, so ew). Heph made iron chains that bound them together to catch them in the act as vengeance, but the other gods just laughed at him and his stupidity that he thought his wife would be faithful. The word hermaphrodite comes from Hermaphroditus, the son of Hermes and Aphrodite who was fused with a nymph.
That has to be from Hercules or Xena - I swear I know that image!
I recently ate through my sister's Percy Jackson series, and I thought it was interesting how Aphrodite was supposedly sea foam. I've wondered if that makes her more of a Titan than a Goddess since she came from Uranus (lol) and not Zeus. Anyway, one of my favorites - well done!

I like Pheadra, I think the name is beautiful!
PHAEDRAGender: FeminineUsage: Greek Mythology (Latinized)Other Scripts: Fa?d?a (Ancient Greek)From the Greek Fa?d?a (Phaidra), derived from fa?d??? (phaidros) meaning "bright". Phaedra was the daughter of Minos and the wife of Theseus in Greek mythology. Aphrodite caused her to fall in love with her stepson Hippolytos, and after she was rejected by him she killed herself.
Ah, thanks for the background. I just read a short story in which a character committs suicide. The only man she contacted before she died breaks into her apartment and finds a book about Phaedra half-open on her night table. It's not until the end, however, that he realizes the girl was in love with him. The Phaedra reference now makes perfect sense.
I am very excited about this month's challenge. The name Atlas has a special meaning in my family, so I'm happy to be able to have it in my siggy throughout this month.
