Mesquito spray (natural and maybe homemade)

Does anyone have a nice natural bug/mosquito spray? We spend a lot of time playing on the porch in the evening and I feel so bad because a few nights ago he got a few mosquito bites.

He has his water table out there and out rain bucket to catch water. I do clean out his water table a few times a week (and use that water to water plants) but I'm sure our porch is still an inviting place for them. I just bought deet free candles to hang up outside and repeal mosquitoes and I may plant some plants in the garden that ward them off soon. But I would like something to spray on LO, DH, and myself. I would rather it be natural and homemade because I don't want deet or chemicals on LO (or us really).

I have heard mosquitoes are not fans coconut oil and eucalyptus oil. Maybe make a mix of these to rub on?

  • I like badgers Bug Balm. We live in the land of prehistoric mesquitos and used it all day yesterday and it worked great. Now my kids are covered in bites but they're all from the day before when we forgot to put it on.

Supposedly Neem Oil works--check it out.  Not sure if you have to dilute it or not.

  • I don't have any recs for you, as I'm also looking for something to use.  Mosquitoes have been really really bad so far this year.  I would make sure you empty out any water from any toys after playing though.  They are attracted to any standing water.

    Yes, and yes. ;)

One oz in one gal. of water, with a few drops of soap to emulsify.  Just keep that mixed up and then refill a spray bottle as needed. It's stinky, but it works. You can use other EO's to offset the smell.
