NBR: Best time to buy/install carpet

I know this may sound dumb in light of the recent holiday with all the carpet/home improvement sales, but does anyone know if I might be able to find a good sale on carpet around Independence Day or Labor Day?  I have been wanting to paint a few rooms(including the new nursery!) before we get new carpet, so hopefully by July 4th weekend we will have those projects completed.  I haven't even begun looking around and just wanted to find out if there might be a sale in the near future.

Re: NBR: Best time to buy/install carpet

  • How much space do you need to carpet?  If it's more than 1 room, the best deal hands down is a good price on installation (not a sale on the carpet itself, it seemed to us those prices didn't vary too much from store to store, just between the types of carpet, some are more $$ than others).

We were SHOCKED at installation prices when we needed new carpet in the house we bought last year.  Seriously... we needed to recarpet half of the house (about 1500 sq ft worth) and just about every place we looked installation per sq ft cost almost as much as a the carpet.  I couldn't fathom paying $3k just for the darn install, not even the carpet!  I still can't believe they charge that much to put it in (and not just at Lowe's, at all the places we checked with).

We ended up going with Lowe's b/c they had a $99 installation deal going on.  Their actual carpet prices were pretty comparable to flooring places (McSwain, Buddy's, etc).  We saved soooo much on the installation that it made up for any small difference in the price of the actual carpet.

    Good luck to you!!

  • What I've found is there is always a sale.  We had our first floor done when we moved in, and the price difference from store to store was amazing.  Salesmen offered us deals too, I guess because of the economy.  We didn't like Harry's Corner because they don't let your take a sample (and it looks really different at home compared to the store).  Buddy's offered us some pretty good deals (buy one foot, get one free), but we didn't see what we wanted.  We were about to go with McSwain because the inlaws have used them before, but I thought the price was too much (even on sale).

We ended up going with Lowe's.  It wasn't my first choice, but I took the McSwain sample in, found the exact same carpet (names were different, but the specs and color were exactly the same) and saved over $1000.  That included upgrading to the premium pad.  We got free installation and were able to use a coupon from the move on top of that (I think.... I know we used some sort of coupon).   I was a little worried about them hiring outside installers, but they were great.  HTH!

  • We carpeted all 3 bedrooms last year and ended up going with Terry's Carpet. We try to support local businesses when we can. He was much cheaper than the bigger name stores, had the carpet installed within 2 days and loved their installers. Then we just had them come back and do our basement with a CA berber and I LOVE it.

Also if all the rooms don't need to be the same look into getting a remnant, much cheaper. I also second Lowe's. They were very competitive with the prices on carpet and had $99 install which is a good deal.
