Wipes warmer question

I bought a wipes warmer to store a few wet, cloth wipes for LO.  I'm a bit confused by the "pillows" that come with them. Are these necessary to use or can I just throw the wipes in w/o the pillow?

    It doesn't really serve any purpose does it (other than providing moisture and a potential breeding ground for bacteria and such Stick out tongue )?  If you aren't using yours, I think I'll try using mine w/o and see what happens...

    It helps me keep the wipes on the bottom from collecting tons of water. Once every couple weeks I run it through the dishwasher and then pop in the microwave to try to kill anything that might have been growing in it. I think you are supposed to replace every 3 months, but I haven't yet.
