Postpartum Depression

Zoloft and nursing

I was taking 50mg prior to becoming pregnant for anxiety and it worked wonders! It literally changed my life. Once I became pregnant I stopped taking it and eventually my anxiety got better. Now, almost 3 weeks PP it it starting up again and at times has gotten extreme (panic attacks). When I start worrying (mostly about our LO) I just spiral out of control and I can only see that this will get worse. I would like to start taking this again but have concerns about taking it while I am nursing. Is anyone taking this and also exclusively nursing?

Re: Zoloft and nursing

  • yes, I am. Talk with your OB, it is one of the anti depressants recommended for nursing mothers. Its the only anti depressents/anti anxiety my psychiatrist will recommend.

  • I am on zoloft and nursing and have had no issues whatsoever with my supply, I started taking it when my LO was around 2 1/2-3 mos old. I have EBF ever since and my LO is now 11 mos.

  • I'm on 250mg of zoloft and EBF.  I also BF'd ds1 while taking it (lower dosage though since they had to up it as my pregnancy progressed.  Our pedi is ok with it as are my psych and midwives.

  • I am.  I took it while pregnant with ds, nursed him for 17.5 months on it, pregnant with dd on it and have been nursing dd for 8 weeks with it.  Talk to your OB, but I strongly feel it's fine for me.  I did take  a break on it for awhile while nursing ds, and the anxiety came back, so I started up again.  Benefits WAY outweigh any potential risks.  (it literally changed my life as well, I've never heard anyone else say that, but it is so true for me!)

  • I also nurse exclusively & take Zoloft for anxiety. My obgyn told me it's one of the only 2 anti-dep's they prescribe while breastfeeding.
