Cloth Diapering

Please help--Rash/Wash questions.

LO started STTN about 2 weeks ago.  Pretty soon after that he started getting diaper rash.  Now it is just bright red, no bumps, on his front along his waist line and legs where the diaper touches.  Everywhere else is clear.

-I've tried calendula cream w/zinc oxide and aquaphor.

-We're using KL0s.  I use a KL doubler at night.

-Wash routine: Cold pre-wash w/Country Save, Hot wash w/Country Save, Extra cold rinse.

-I'm not having absorbancy or stink issues.

I'm assuming I should strip, yes?

Should I change my wash routine?

I realize now that I should have used a fleece liner with those creams, and I didn't.  Will stripping fix that?

Any ideas about how to treat the rash?  He has had eczema on his face and chest.  Should I try the hydrocortizone that I used to treat that?

tia!

Re: Please help--Rash/Wash questions.

  • So it's just a rash along the elastic of the diaper? is it on too tight or does it look more like a solid red burn? If you don't have stink issues and the diapers seem to be absorbing fine, you probably don't have to strip. Have you tried using a fleece liner to keep the moisture further from his skin? You may also need to go to a more absorbent diaper for night. A more absorbent diaper will pull the moisture (ammonia) further from his skin as well. You can use hydrocortisone on the affected area, but from what I read you don't want to resort to this for long periods of time.

  • It does sound like a rubbing issue more than anything, but I wanted to add that it does sound like you're using too much detergent - I usually do the prewash with just water - so by cutting out that detergent, you may be saving yourself some build-up issues down the line.

Definitely not too tight, but yes, that's where the rash is located, and yes, it looks like a solid red burn.  I'll try the fleece, thanks.
