Babies: 9 - 12 Months

temper tantrums already?

DS is starting to throw temper tantrums!  At 10.5 months!  When he is mad he will throw himself backwards arching his back.  If you are not expecting it he will almost throw himself out of your arms or off your lap!

Anyone else going through the temper tantrums already? and what are you doing about it? if anything.

  • Yes, DD throws tantrums too. When she gets mad, she will either try to bite/scratch me, bite her hand, or bite the floor all while screaming. I know, weird. I usually either ignore it or redirect her. If I give her attention for it, it just encourages the behavior.

Yes. We have recently upgraded from what you described to adding banging her head on the ground or wall as well. The pedi said to ignore her.

DD throws tantrums too. If she tries to throw herself down we'll just sit her on the floor. If she's screaming because she wants something she can't have, we don't give in.

  • DS is 9 months old today. For a little over a week now, he's started crying until he's coughs & gags & eventually throws up. I wasn't sure it was a tantrum because he was doing it at night after having night terrors. Then this morning, he was done with his cheerios & the sitter was fixing his bottle (I visit for a while before leaving for work) and he started screaming at her. His screams turned to cries, coughs, and gags. He never threw up, but I asked if he's doing this often... a couple times a day it turns out. We agreed to handle it by ignoring it as much as possible. We're not going to move any faster to get him what he wants than we usually would. Of course, if he's actually choking we can't ignore that, but as long as he's doing it for show... hate it for ya, buddy.

I'm ready to climb the walls, too, buddy.

  • Not that I wish bad behavior on others...but I'm glad I'm not alone here.  I thought I had irreparably spoiled him already!  lol
  • DD throws temper tantrums too. If she doesn't want to do it or doesn't want something taken from her she will SCREAM. It's not cute, it's not adorable, she just turns into a beast right then and there. I just keep on doing what I was doing. If I was putting her into her highchair I just keep putting her in there. She settles down as soon as I get her in there, but I don't let her win. I can handle the screaming for the short amount of time she throws a fit.

DD does all of the above PLUS, she'll crawl up to a wall and bang her head on it. I have trouble not laughing- it's just too funny.

  • I am glad I am not the only one! One of mine also bangs her head on the floor and tries to hit me in the face. I try my hardest to ignore her, but like the PP said, it is really hard not to laugh.

Our son started this at about 10.5-11 mos. too, complete with the arching back. He also does some head-butting. We are ignoring it all (keeping him safe of course) and that seems to be working. We are now mostly seeing the behavior when he is tired.
