when does one "worry" about being sick?

I have been sick since last Thursday... So 11 days now. It has lessened in some way but is worse in others. I am not AS congested but still congested and now it's all in my chest and I am coughing a lot. 3 days now if I lay on my left side when I sleep I wake up "choking" and hack my lung up to the point where it makes me throw up. (could be the pregnancy gag reflex though, but not sure). I am not normally one to have a weak stomach or throw up a lot though, if that matters... This is just seriously SO bad. Should I begin to worry and call the doctor now as I thought the normal "cold" was like 3-5 days max?

Re: when does one "worry" about being sick?

  • I'm the same way. I've been sick since two Wednesdays ago. I went to ambient care this past Thurs and was told it was just a cold. I was actually feeling like it was on its way out! Woke up yesterday feeling like the cold started all over again.

I think B and I are just passing it back and forth. My poor baby has snotty nose that runs all night and he ends up rubbing it in his eyes, which I'm sure will lead to pink eye. ~sigh~

I'm taking homeopathic cough medicine, which helped me last night, but I'm not even sure if it's safe for preg/nursing.

  • In your shoes, I'd call your midwife/OB and ask what they recommend. You need to make sure you don't have a fever that gets over 102? and also make sure you are staying well hydrated. I think that bad coughing could also cause some problems, so they need to know what's up.

Good points! Celti, I'm coughing so hard that my abs hurt and I'm pretty sure one of my labor hemorrhoids has reappeared...Embarrassed You definitely don't want to put undue stress on the baby if you're coughing like that.

  • I really feel ya.. I had this for over 2 weeks, luckily its gone now but it was the kind that really lingers for a while. I'm not sure if OTC Mucinex is ok to take or not, but I know it's really helped me in the past. Especially with choking and hacking at night, it just helps get all that yuckiness out of your chest. I would call since its lasted this long though. Also if you have a fever you should call without a doubt. I know this type of 'cold' normally sticks around for a while and takes a little time till its completely gone, at last that how it has been for us the past couple years. Take it easy and eat soup :-] also try to stay away from the foods/ drinks that increase mucus [i.e. ketchup lol]

  • I have been hydrating for sure. I normally hydrate a lot more during pregnancy/nursing but since it's been so hot here too I have stepped it up even more. I think I had at least 100 oz of water yesterday. LOL I had 4 bottles just at the Zoo, so that was like 80 oz and then I had 2 big glasses in the morning before we left and another with and after dinner...

As for the fever, I think I am good there, too. I haven't spiked a temp at all.

I think the worst part is the coughing... I didn't even realize it might hurt the baby. I will call and ask. I do have some "safe to take" guafessin (sp?) cough syrup. Maybe I'll try that tonight.

     Thanks, ladies!!!
