For swimming in a lake or the ocean, you could use an un-stuffed pocket. If you're swimming in a chlorinated pool you should probably spend the $10-$12 on a swim diaper so you don't ruin the PUL on your pocket.
I've used the iPlay and a Bummis Swimmi on DD. I like them both, but the Bummis one is more adjustable.
The pool I take my LO swimming in (at my in-laws) is a salt water pool, not chlorine, and I use a Flip cover with no liner in it. Works great. A unstuffed pocket also works well. Like PP said, a swim diaper's only purpose is to contain fecal matter, not urine.
