The Sunscreen Post Reminded Me

I'm picky about not putting a lot of chemicals on my kid, and she has really sensitive skin, so I tend to spend quite a bit more on sunscreens.  We're outside most days, and often play with other kids in the neighborhood or go on playdates to the park, zoo, etc.  Most of the moms think nothing of grabbing my sunscreen & slathering it all over their kid.  Which would be fine if the sunscreen wasn't $14 a tube.  I'm going to go broke before summer's over.  But I'm not going to tell them they can't use it, either.

Am I screwed, or is there a way around this?

  • Carry 2 kinds?  The one you use and a cheaper one for everyone else to use?

  • Do carry a bag with you? Put it back in the bag immediately. If another mom tries to grab it, offer up the cheaper one and explain that LO has super sensitive skin and needs special sunscreen, but you keep the other one on hand for yourself and others.

    This.

  • What CB said - and it's totally rude of them to use your sunscreen at all imo.

I like this.  I just hate to seem rude in a "here's some cheap crap for your kid" kind of way.

It's not nearly as rude to give them cheap stuff as it is for them to just assume they'll be able to use your liquid gold sunblock.  That would piss me off.  Even buying stuff that's $8-10 a tube, we still easily spend $50-75 on sunblock every summer, and another $30 or so the rest of the year, just for the three of us (DH buys the spray-on stuff for himself... whatev dude LOL).  No way am I providing it for the whole playgroup too.  Once or twice for a mom who genuinely forgot, fine.  After that though I'm going to start passive aggressively telling someone to pull their head out of their asss and buy their own stuff and keep it in their damn bag.

I am kind of horrified that would even happen. If they knew you and said they left theirs at home and wanted to borrow some fine but everyone assuming you are the sunscreen lady is crap.
