2nd Trimester

White bits on nipples!

Hi ladies. I'm on the cusp of first and second trimester (13 weeks tomorrow), but I thought this would be better posted among ladies who are further along.

I'm not worried about this, just curious! I have white spots on the tips of my nipples. I don't mean the areolas, I mean the tips of my nipples themselves. It's not just discoloured skin because if I rub it gently, it sort of flakes (but doesn't really flake off on its own). Is this just a weird skin thing? Is it miniscule bits of milk duct leakage that's drying up? I haven't noticed any actual fluid leakage. In fact my breasts have barely changed in size (still really little) and haven't been tender at all!

Has anyone experienced the same thing and does anyone know what it's from?

  • Sounds like they're just dry.  Try moisturizing.

I have it, but i don't know what it is. It hasn't concerned me all that much, but my conclusion was either dry skin or weird leakage.

  • It is normal. I  don't know what it is officially, but I think it has to do with the milk ducts, etc.  I have gotten it with all my pregnancies, while I am nursing, and it lasts through weaning.  Moisturizer can't hurt to try, but I find it changes nothing.

  • I have it.. Don't know what it is but I am pretty sure it isn't dry skin since I moisturize 2x a day everyday, even before BFP.  I was going to ask my doctor during my breast exam but I forgot and have not felt the need to bring it up..  But when he did my breast exam he did check my nipples and he didn't say anything about it so I am thinking it is nothing to worry about and probably some crazy thing that I am better not knowing about because I would some how find a way to obsess about it!  ha ha ha

  • Thanks, ladies! Yeah, I don't think it's dry skin either because it's so concentrated on the tips and nowhere else. Plus the nature of it...it doesn't flake off hte way dry skin would and it's sort of spots right on/in the nipple witht he regular, darker nipple around them. And they just don't feel excessively dry. I'm totally just curious about it, not worried at all. I just always want to know why why why!!! :)

Well if you ever figure it out, let us know... Because I want to know why too! :-)

  • I'm going to ask my doctor what the deal is at my next appointment. Too bad it's a few weeks away! Dr. Google wasn't much help.
  • Sounds like you're starting to produce colostrum, which is the "forerunner" to milk for your little one.  Totally normal.
