Pregnant after a Loss

Can you help? (Progesterone Question)

I have been searching the internet and haven?t found an answer to this question, can you help? I had a m/c at 5 weeks my betas were low from the start 28, then 18 and my progesterone was at 9.2 on the first blood draw. My question, does having low progesterone in that pregnancy mean it will be low next time? I?m not sure if it was low because it wasn?t a viable pregnancy from the start or if that is what caused the loss. I have read that it can cause early miscarriage so my mind is spinning in a thousand directions, if it?s something I need to fix before getting pregnant again or if it was just a fluke in that pregnancy. Has anyone experienced this or have any insight to this? I hope this would be the right board to post this, if not please point me in the right direction. Thanks ladies, I hope to join you soon!

I had 3 losses ...1st and 3rd were chemical pregnancies so pretty much the progesterone in those were really low.....The second pregnancy my first progesterone level was 13 and the second was 10 and I subsequently lost that pregnancy. This pregnancy it has been between 16.5-28 . It can be an issue but you may want to talk to your doctor about supplements with prometrium or such next time. Good luck!

  • When I had my loss my progesterone was either 11 or 13.  My OB did put me on prometrium, but I still lost the baby.  I am still early with this pregnancy but so far my progesterone has been 37.  If you are concerned, it is certainly worth mentioning to your dr.  Good luck and I hope to see you here soon!

    I'm sorry for your loss.

Basically it could be either of the above.  After your next cycle starts you can try to get your doctor to test your progesterone after you ovulate to see if it is on the low side or within the normal range.   This should be a good indicator of whether or not you have progesterone problems that could be affecting pregnancy.

  • I am so sorry for your loss.

My dr's have told me that it's very hard to tell whether low progesterone can lead to m/c or whether low progesterone is a sign that m/c is impending.  I guess the research on this is very inconclusive.  I had low progesterone with all three of my losses.  With this pregnancy I started progesterone supplements at 4dpo (plus heparin) and am still going at 6w5d.  Have a discussion with your dr about it.  Maybe he/she would be willing to do 7dpo progesterone testing your next cycle to check it.  GL.

This is great advice, and I wanted to add that I did monitored clomid & profasi cycles, so I learned quite a bit about follicles.  Progesterone is made by the corpus luteum, which is the follicle that released the egg that cycle.  If the egg isn't a "strong" egg, my doctor said the follicle won't be either, which means it doesn't make enough progesterone to support pregnancy- like natural selection.  I didn't find any research to back this up, but it seem pretty simple explanation of why one cycle would be low, another could be okay.  You definitely should ask for b/w to test serum progesterone at 7dpo every cycle- I did mine for 4 cycles & that resulted in going on progesterone suppositories because I had a repeat pattern of low progesterone.  I had to beg for the last cycle's test, and without the results (low), I wouldn't have been put on the meds and wouldn't still be pregnant (in my opinion!).

I see where you are coming from and that's the idea I got from researching the issue also. That's what I  was concerned about to hold off and do some testing and make sure it's not a problem before getting PG and losing another. Thank you so so so much for the wealth of information. I just called my doctor and she looked at my charts and agreed that we may have a problem with the LP and progesterone. You girls are great!

  • I've had low progestrone on every one of my 4 pregnancies - 2 m/c, 1 LO, and current pregnancy.  I've taken progesterone every time.  I always started taking it as soon as I got a BFP. GL!
