mucous in BM

pediatrician wanted us to supplement with soy formula instead of cow's milk based formula.  it's been 4 days since the switch and DS still has mucous in his BM.  i nurse ninety percent of the time so could it be that my little dairy intake is affecting him (i'm lactose intolerant so i have a bit of dairy daily).  could it also mean that DS is also allergic to soy?  i also thought maybe DS has a viru but he shows no other signs other than mucous in BM.

p.s. ds BM is not green, it's still mustard yellow wit seedy texture.

It can take up to 2 weeks for dairy proteins to be out of the system completely.  He could still be dealing with prior milk intake.

I would completely cut dairy if I were you.  Not cutting all of it isn't really helping if he is truly allergic to it.

My allergist told me 60% of babies who are allergic to dairy are also allergic to soy, so he could also be reacting to the soy.  My daughter was positive to dairy at 3 months and negative to soy, but later became allergic to soy at 5 months.

  • he's probably reacting to your diet. Also 50% of children allergic to cows milk are also allergic to soy.  Try another form of formula.. a non soy/milk formula -they tend to be super expensive but since you mainly BF, it's not so bad.

I would also cut out milk/soy out of your diet for 2 weeks and see how he does.

is that new? i though it was 50?  scary thought if the #'s are going up.  Also, same thing with us.  He was negative for soy on his first test and positive on his second. so he also developed it.  his doc said that it's b/c he wasn't exposed to soy before his first test.

  • If you're nursing at all, I'd cut all of the dairy and soy out of your diet.  I don't know your back story, is there a reason you're supplementing?  There are super hypoallergenic formulas that you might want to try too, though I hear they're not good tasting/smelling and if you're BFing too, you might have an issue with getting your LO to drink it.
