Pregnant after a Loss

NO re-check on betas if bleeding?!?

I started bleeding (lightly) on Sunday afternoon and thought that I was getting my period (perfect timing).  By yesterday morning it had stopped, so I though "why not take a PT".....positive!  First thought....YEAH!!  Second thought......why am I bleeding.  I called the doctors and they wanted to see me right away.

I went in today, got blood work done, quick exam, and the doctor says..."ok.  We'll see you back in 4 weeks!".

I KNOW that there can be implantation bleeding, but I would think that after a MC only 6 months ago that they would want to re-check my betas in a week.  Any thoughts?

  • I would think with your history of m/c plus since you are bleeding, they would want to re-check betas to make sure they are doubling. If it were me, I'd insist on more betas.

What did they take blood for if they aren't checking your betas?

  • My doctor didn't do betas either. I thought with a history of loss they would automatically do it, but I had to ask.  I hope the bleeding stay away!

  • They said they were doing the normal pregnancy work-up.  Like I said, I was a little confused since i did not go in for a "normal" pregnancy check-up, but went since I was bleeding.....

My life has a superb cast but I can't figure out the plot.
  • Ask them for it. First ask nicely, something like, "after experiencing a loss, I would be much more comfortable doing follow=up blood work in a few days".  If they still say no, tell them you cannot function until you get it done- you can't concentrate, and you are completely stressed.  I did this (it was true though) and they redid my bloodwork.

  • I'd push for this. I wish I had with my first loss -- it would be really nice to have that info now to compare with my current pg.

Hmmm...Odd. I wonder if they consider betas as part of a "normal" work up, or if it is just like some yes or no blood test?

This.  One loss isn't "enough" to trigger automatic betas with most doctors.

  • Some doctors won't treat a pg women differently until after they have more than 1 loss, so maybe that is what your OB is doing.
