NPR: When would you paint a ceiling, and when wouldn't you?

We are moving and repainting our new master bedroom, and I'm not sure if I should paint the ceiling in the "color," a camel-ish taupe, or a lighter shade or white.  What is the theory here?  I have done both, but I'm wondering if there is a rule and if so, what it is.  Thanks!

  • It's your house - you can make your own rule.

My bedroom ceiling is the same color as my walls (yellow).

  • I think generally if you have a lower ceiling painting it the same color as the room is supposed to open things up - I find it easier to paint the ceiling white - you don't have to paint ceilings anywhere near as frequently, so if you decide to repaint you won't need to do the ceiling.
  • I never paint the ceiling because I hate painting and that is just more stuff to paint.  Is that a good answer?
  • I like it all one color because noone can seem to get the edges to not leak into each other no matter how well they tape off the ceiling.
