Babies on the Brain

This...means...WAR!

I'm now officially at war with fleas! I found one on Gonzo! Of course where there's one...

I think I caught it early, he hasn't been scratching and neither have the cats. I bathed him with some anti-flea shampoo, and after my apt tonight we're going to get all the good carpet and upholstery stuff and go to town.

Anyone have any reccomendations? Brands that work really well?

  • We use a new flea drop from that our vet gave us.  They only have it out in dogs but it is AWESOME.  It kicks Frontline's asss.  I will call DH and try to get the name.

  • I always put frontline on the pups. I tried vecrta3d, but after a few months, they were still having trouble getting used to it. I have heard that the biospot and brands like that are really bad for pups. Do your research before getting any flea stuff, especially since you're carrying raptor and all. :). Sorry, my advice sucked, but basically try not to be in the house when you spray it down. Gl and I hope you get them all!

Adams.  We had this problem about a year ago and it was horrible even though we too caught it early.  Adams is the only thing that finally worked.  And you must vacuum a LOT.

ETA - Adams is home and carpet spray.  Of course you'd want to treat your pet with frontline or whatever you choose.

  • Our vet gave us a pill that worked like Advantage. It worked better for us than the drops.
  • I freakin' HATE fleas!  ::scratch::  I hope they go away quickly.  I have a carpet shampooer that I use for that.  I think Resolve is the brand.

Edit: Resolve is the carpet cleaning solution.  Auggie has had Frontline many times.

My parents have a beastly steam-cleaner that we're borrowing on saturday, we were planning on it before hand, hopefully that will help too.

Sprinkle diatomaceous earth under the dog bed and under furniture on the carpet. In addition to frontline or capstan.

    What's that?

  • Lurker here, but I had to wage a war against fleas once, and it was horrible.  Like a previous poster said, vacuum at least once a day if not more often, empty the canister or remove the bag after each vacuum, seal the contents and throw away outside.

You can also set up pans of dishwashing liquid and water in front of night lights.  Apparently fleas are attracted to the light and die in the water/dish soap.

I also had to sprinkle my carpets with Borax to kill the eggs (it was a very bad flea infestation), but I would NOT do that while pregnant.

Good luck, and seriously vacuum a lot!!

    What's that?

It's actually ground up fossil bones. Totally harmless to us (in fact they put some in flour to keep the flour bugs at bay), pets, etc, but to a small insect each grain is like a shard of glass that pierces their exoskeleton and causes them to die of dehydration in a few days. You can buy it at some hardware/lawn stores, some pool supply places, and amazon. Buy food grade so they're tiny powder like powdered sugar. You can even put it on the pet but it can be a tad drying to the skin.

That freaking rules. Pregnancy safe! ::thumbs up::

I'm a vet tech and if it were me, I would go to my vet and get Comfortis for my dog and revolution for my cats and that's all I would do. Honestly, if you've only seen one flea, it could have easily jumped on Gonzo while he was outside and you may not have any other fleas. Unless you have a heavy infestation, you don't need to treat the area. Your pets will attract any fleas around and kill the fleas before they have a chance to lay eggs. Comfortis is a tablet that works extremely well, better than anything else I've seen and you don't have to worry about it washing off or it getting on you since you're preggers. Revolution for the cats is the only cat product I've ever seen work really well. It's the oily drops and I would be careful not to get it on myself if I were you.

Ooo I like the idea of a tablet. I can have DH apply drops to the cats, so I dont have to touch them.

Comfortis is the bomb diggity. Frontline sucks. Use Comfortis for Gonzo. Revolution if you have cats. Don't treat the area.

If it's time to buy heartworm prevention, ask for Trifexis. It's Interceptor & Comfortis combined into one pill.

This stuff works great.  I bought a 40lb bag of the food grade D. Earth for $30 to treat a roach problem and haven't seen a roach since.  This bag will last forever too.

I bought it at a local farm supply store.  It should say "food grade" right on the front.

however long the night, dawn will break.
