Pregnant after a Loss

Intro and BFP

I recently had a D&C and at my follow-up, the MD told me we could start trying right away. Well, we did and it seems it worked! I am freaking out b/c I don't want to get all excited if everything's not okay. I guess having a m/c will do that, as you all know.

I'm waiting for the nurse to call me back so that she'll probably have me come in and do blood work. We're going out of town this weekend, so I'm wondering how this will all work since you usually go back 48 hours later, right? They'll do progesterone levels, too, which, I believe are the same way.

What did you go through the first time you got a BFP after your loss? I'm so scared! TIA!

Did your blood work after the D&C get to 0 before you started TTC again?

  • They didn't do any blood work after the D&C. She just did a vaginal exam and said things were good. It worries me, for sure!

Congratulations and welcome!  Yes, if you have betas done, they aren't any more helpful than an HPT if you don't have a second one done.

Getting a bfp was very exciting, but of course there are nerves too.  Nervousness, frustration, and worry can consume a PGALer from time to time, but you will get through it.

Oh, and by the way, there are lots of people on here who tried very hard to get to this point (pregnancy), and the vast majority took a lot longer than 5 weeks.  That is really great for you, I am very happy!...but you might want to think about editting that part out of your title (or re-wording it) as it can carry a bit of sting especially to those on here who went through multiple fertility treatments or those who have experienced multiple losses.  It doesn't personally bother me, but I don't know about everyone else.  There's nothing wrong with leaving that part in your post, it's part of your journey.

I hope you have a very happy and healthy nine months...and a great holiday weekend!

Omg, I apologize to anyone I've already offended 5 minutes after my first post here! I'm so sorry! That was not my intention. I added details b/c, due to those circumstances, I'm leary that my BFP is real and wondering what happens next.

Thanks for the heads up and for the positive words!

Oh, no, don't worry or be upset!  I highly doubt that you offended anyone!  I just know that people get a little extra sensitive from time to time, and some are in more vulnerable states than others at times.

I didn't initially think about what PP said about having HCG levels tested after the D&C, but two beta draws should clear things up for you.  I hope you are still able to relax this weekend.

Did you test out your HCG levels after your D&C? If not, it could very well be residual HCG. I didn't test negative on a HPT until 6.5wks after my D&C. I don't mean to scare you and I truly hope that this is a new pregnancy and everything goes well.

Thanks for this info. I never took an HPT since the D&C and now wish I had early on, just to monitor this since they didn't do any bloodwork. We'll see. Thanks again!

    hi there!

i hate to be a downer, but unless you had blood following you down to 0 or tested yourself to negative with pregnancy tests, there really is no way to tell if this is real or still left over from the last pregnancy. i personally took 6 weeks to get a negative result on my pregnancy tests from the previous pregnancy.

i hope this is your BFP! theonly thing you can do is wait for the bloodwork and see if it's rising, or decreasing, because that's the only way to tell if this is real or not right now.

hope this helps, and like i said i hope this is real for you!

  • The others already voiced the thoughts I had that there is a possiblilty this maybe residual hcg.  I hope its not and this is the real deal for you, but we've seen it happen to others before and just want to be sure you're aware that sometimes it takes awhile for it to clear out post m/c.

Like Hadley mentioned, a couple of beta draws should clear up any question of this.  Time will as well, if you or your doctor aren't game for the blood tests.

Fingers crossed that this is the real deal and you're here for keeps!

    ~All AL'ers welcome~

  • Well first off, I'm sorry for your previous loss and congratulations on this latest pregnancy. I also got pregnant right after my m/c (saw two pink lines 4 weeks later) and had such mixed emotions. All docs handle cases differently but this was my experience... I tested positive on a sunday and called the doc first thing Monday. I went in to the office (which is ina hospital) that same day and literally just picked up a blood slip and went straight to the lab. They called with the results the next day and I repeated the bloodwork again three days later for comparison purposes. I know its supposed to double ever 48 to 72 hours but that doesn't mean you need to have the blood taken again during that time. They apply formulas to check on the rate so still take your weekend trip and enjoy yourself! I ended up with a good rising hcg level but my progesterone was low and not going up so I took prometrium until I think 12 weeks (when the placenta takes over producing progesterone) As far as the mixed emotions, I wish I could say that the new baby instantly took away my grief for my lost baby but it didn't. It took quite some time to allow myself to get excited and there's an awareness that there is no guarantees on this baby. I didn't have the same excitement for ultrasounds that I've seen other women get...I had fears. I also didn't want to talk much about my pregnancy especially in the beginning. That being said I am well into my second trimester and things look great. My hubby and I are ready to actually start buying things for the baby and look at cribs. I still think about the other little one and I think I always will even though logically I know I obviously wouldn't have my current baby if I hadn't lost the first. Loving your new baby doesn't negate the love you have for the one you lost. think of #1 as a guardian angel for #2. And if you believe in souls and reuniting in an afterlife, have faith and comfort that you will all be together again. Good luck with this pregnancy. I hope its healthy and that you feel great!
