I don't want this to get lost in the birth control post below.
The mini pill is perfectly safe to use while breastfeeding, but it's not as effective as a normal pill.
Speaking from experience, I'd definitely plan to use condoms or some other form of bc along with the mini pill if that's the route you take.
Re: Mini pill
I used it for 6 years without problems. Had no periods unless I missed one (then had spotting). My doc kept suggesting I go back to the regular pill, but I liked having no side effects. Besides...it was working.
He said it is less effective. But it's a small percentage. 5 nurse practitioners I worked with at a women's clinic all said 93% effective with typical use and 96 with perfect. (opposed to 98% perfect usage with regular pill). I missed 3 of them in a row and got pregnant. Which could happen with regular pill (you can get pregnant missing one of any pill).
With mini pills you MUST take them same time of day within an hour of your usual time. Whereas regular pill, you have a 3 hour window for the best results. As with any pill, if you miss one day, you should use protection until you have been back on them perfectly for a week.
I, too, was taking them at the exact same time every day. I breastfed for 14 months and got pregnant on the 6th month and the 10th month.
And I thought I was friggin fertile, lol! I got pregnant being two days without my Nuva ring. Then missing 3 days of my mini pill.
