brushing teeth

I feel like this is a silly question, but when do I start brushing LO's teeth?  She is almost 7 months and just recently got two bottom teeth in.  When did you start brushing and do you just use a regular old toothbrush and toothpaste?  I have terrible teeth and I want to do my best to keep her teeth in good condition.

Re: brushing teeth

  • We got the little finger thing (it's in the toothbrush section) and started cleaning her teeth with water and that once she was more steadily on solid foods (so 8 or 9 months?).  Prior to that, we just wiped her teeth with a burp cloth morning and night (she only had a couple of teeth prior to 8 or 9 months).

  • We started brushing once he had a couple of teeth (with just water). Mostly it involved DS playing with/sucking on the toothbrush. By about a year old, we were brushing every night. We do use toothpaste now, but I know it's not necessary - DS just likes it.

  • we had a dental care kit from summer infant. it had a finger brush, a nubby gum massager, tooth brush and a few other pieces.

when just bf i would wipe with a cloth, and used the massager to get him used to it and he liked to chomp on it. Then we moved on to the finger brush until he got more teeth and was chomping with lots of teeth (ouch). We moved on to the brush (with water until a year or so) with no flouride practice tooth paste after a year (not sure exactly when)

to this day, he loves brushing teeth and flossing. I think it's b/c we started really early getting him ready for it.

so it's not too early to try :)

  • My uncle is a pediatric dentist and he gave us a tiny Oral B toothbrush and some Crest kids toothpaste.  I didn't want to give DD artificial sweeteners, so I bought some Tom's Children's toothpaste.  Also - there is a debate about using fluoridated toothpaste w/infants but I asked and my uncle said he always gives little ones toothpaste with fluoride in it.

  • We started out using a wet washcloth to clean DD's teeth and her gums.  Once she had more teeth and could really bite down, we started using a toothbrush.  I don't think we started using toothpaste (toddler, non-fluoridated) until close to 2 (I think).  I just remember that it was whenever the pediatrician gave us the OK.
