Pretty much since DD came home we have had the humidifier running in her room for naps and bedtime. It makes a pretty loud white noise and it blocks out other noises from the house to help her sleep better. We decided yesterday to try and get rid of the humidifier and use a tower fan instead. I feel like we are going through humidifier filters like candy and they are around $10 a pop. And I've also noticed that since it is more humid out now, when I go into DD's room in the morning after she has been asleep all night the room smells and feels really moist. I know that is what a humidifier does, but I don't want crap to start growing in her room if that is even possible. We tried using the new tower fan last night, but it wasn't loud enough. If you use some kind of white noise in your LO's room, what do you use? If you happen to use a humidifier, do you have one that doesn't go through filters so quickly? And I know this is dumb, but is there any harm in running the humidifier in her room all the time for sleep? I know eventually we need to break the white noise habit, but I'm not ready to do that yet. I still need white noise to sleep
Re: white noise for LO's room
We have this one, by Homedics. https://www.amazon.com/HoMedics-SS-2000-Relaxation-Machine-Nature/dp/B000F3QG0U/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1306414428&sr=8-3
I just bought it at Bed Bath + Beyond last week - 20 bucks and then you can use a coupon of course.
I can't speak highly enough of it. I buy it for every baby shower I'm invited to. It has saved me/her/us. It is most definitely the best/most useful gift that I received and didn't register for.
Our house is small-ish and resonates sound. This allows us to watch tv or have people over and not worry about DD staying up all night.

We use this one:

It is probably on the more expensive side compared to the others, but we had them at a previous employer, so I knew they work well. We have 2 - one for Ruby's room, and one for our room. In addition to filtering out noise so she can sleep, I use it when I want to go to sleep early and DH wants to play loud video games/watch loud tv/talk on the phone (he's a very loud talker on the phone).
We also take it with us when we travel, and it has definitely helped us through some nights where hotel rooms were not exactly quiet.
We have this one as well. It works great. We only use the humidifier when LO is sick or its super dry.

We like that it has the classical music and mp3 player options. If you read the reviews, several talk about the sounds not being all that calming...and I agree with them. However, DD loves them, and since the alternative is a recording of a hair dryer on repeat (which makes me want to climb the walls), I'll deal with the bizarre noises, so long as she sleeps. It has the option of a 60-minute timer or running until you turn it off. It also runs on batteries for travel.

I read in the happiest babies on the block book that you can use a radio and tune it to static. that might be a cheaper option if you want to try that first?
I also saw this on the baby good buys blog earlier:

We have this one too. It's great because you can adjust it even more than just low and high. Small enough for travel too!
