Birthday cake help

So it's almost DS first birthday and I need to start thinking about his cake. He started solids late and is still doing mostly purees and smaller things like puffs, yogurt, cheese, toast, etc. I have tried moving him to more "solid" solids but he is really not interested and he still only has 3 teeth so he is definately not proficient at chewing and often chokes/gags. Is he going to be ok with cake?

Part two- I am going to let him do the traditional cake smash but I am wondering if there are any places that do a small cake(4"-5")? All I can seem to find is a double layer 8" cakes and that seems huge. Especially if he is just going smash it all over. DH refuses to let me just give him a cupcake because he says that's no fun and he wants the messy pictures. Ugh! If it was up to me I would just do a homemade low sugar cupcake but I have been rejected. Oh the strange things DH decides to have an opinion on, I tell ya.

Thanks ladies!

Re: Birthday cake help

  • How about making a single layer round cake (low sugar if you want, use applesauce instead of oil) and top it with big mounds of whipped cream?  It'll be plenty messy for pictures, and you don't have to add much sugar to the whipped cream if you don't want to.  He'll probably eat mostly the whipped cream.

M's 1st bday cake was a big ol' slice of Costco cake, nothing healthy about it.  She ate mostly the cream cheese frosting and barely any cake.  :)

  • Oh, and Albertsons does a "cake for 2" that's basically a mini frosted cake if you'd rather buy.  It'll be plenty sugary though.  :)

  • he should be fine with cake. its not hard and not really a choking hazard so I wouldnt worry to much about that. I know our local grocery store (haggen) will make a "smash cake" when you order the birthday cake. Basically they take a healthy slice and frost it and decorate it to match the main cake for free.

  • Almost no kids have molars before they are one and that's what you use for "chewing"... so having teeth is not in any way necessary for eating solid foods.... they gum them.  He should be able to eat cake no problem at all.  ANd things that are much mroe chewy than that...

Safeway does a free little bitty cake if you buy a birthday cake for their first birthday.   THey also make single layer 8 inch cakes - that's what I got for Ben.  For Cooper I just made one.

Having the big cake to smash is FUN!!  do it!  Dont' worry about the sugar or whatever.  It's one day.

  • I gave DD one of the big cupcakes (the size of a Costco Muffin) for her 1st b-day with cream cheese frosting for her bday. It was perfect size to make a big mess but not waste a huge cake... Costco sells big cupcakes like that now too!

I think cake should be just fine--it's soft and not a choking hazard.

Most grocery stores make small cakes, so you could do one of those, OR, if you have a friend who's a fantastic baker, you could ask always ask her. Angel Another option would be a giant cupcake from Costco.

     Good luck!
