Baby Names

family names

What do you think of the name Joe?  I LOVE all of the versions of it, Joseph, Joey, Joe....that's pretty rare, I usually like just one version but hate the nn or vice versa.

I like that it is classic and I don't think it's been used much in a while, in fact my brother mentioned that he doesn't work with any little Joe's (he counsels kids).  The problem, it is my brother, FIL, and sort of dad's name (my dad is Victor Joseph, but was called Joe by his family....so some people know him as Vic, some as Joe but he'll answer to both).

I really love the idea of naming our future son after the most important men in our lives, and I am sure our fathers would be over the moon to have their grandson named after them.  However it's already annoying to have three people answer when you say hey Joe at a family function.  Even if he is called Joey for several years, my older relatives still call my brother Joey.  WDYT?

Re: family names

  • My dad's name is Dale, my grandpa's name is Dale and I have a great uncle named Dale all on the same side of the family. It's funny to joke about but it really doesn't bother any of us. Joe is a great, strong name.
  • My family has a series of Scott Patrick's. We fixed this by using all variations of the nickname, and when we ran out, we called the newest addition to the family (my younger cousin) "Lil Scotty". Same thing with Charles--after we ran out of different nicknames, the youngest one (my uncle) got called by his full name "Charles Michael".

Basically what I mean to say is that your family will figure out a way differentiate between everyone and find a way to give Joe his own "Joe" lol.

  • Joe is a great name. I married a Joe and what's funny is that he's the only Joe I've known since I was in middle school. He loves his name and it never gets misspelled or mispronounced!

  • He could go by Joseph! I think it's really special when a strong name like Joe gets used by multiple family members. My great-grandpa was Jim, my dad is Jim, and my brother goes by Jimmy (occasionally James). I remember when some of my dad's old buddies would call the house they'd as for "big Jim" and ask how "little Jim" or "Jr" was doing. I bet if my brother has a boy eventually, he'll be Jim as well. So just make sure your brother Joey doesn't want the name for himself.
