Preemie/Newborn Clothes... how many??

We're expecting twin boys in July (hopefully!) but my due date isn't till August 14th, so we're confident that they will be small. How many preemie/newborn clothes will I need? I only have about 11 preemie outfits and maybe 20-25 newborn outfits.

I also have 25-35 gowns because I anticipate them sleeping in gown until they're too big. I hate to buy a bunch of clothes that they aren't going to need/wear, and it seems that the majority of what we got at our shower was 0-3 month clothes (of which, I think I have more than they could EVER wear! lol). Any suggestions?

I think what you have is more than enough, so long as your outfits are the useful  kind (like footie pjs) and not the fancy "take pro pics of me in this" kind of thing (button down jacket + pants) lol.
  • I would say you definitely have enough! I never used a single gown because the babies are in their bouncers a lot, and it's annoying to buckle the straps around gowns. For the other things, that should be plenty to last between loads of laundry.

  • I think that you have plenty.  I would go with less, because you never know how big they will be.  You can always send someone else to buy more.  We had summer babies and they lived in a diaper and button front white gerber t shirts.  We didn't even bother with pants because we were constantly changing them and we swaddled to sleep.  Teh gowns you mentioned are great too.

Why are you saying they will be here in July if you are due August 14th?

  • You have plenty!

I ended up needing preemie clothes but never bought any.  It was no big deal.  I had lined up my sister to go get some if we needed them, but my Mom's BF was all over it.  She bought me tons, washed them, and had them delivered to the house when I got home.

You never know how big they're going to be, so I'd hold off purchasing more preemie stuff for sure.  You may not even use it.

  • I started having contractions last week. They gave me IV fluids, Stadol, and 2-3 (?) doses of Procardia and they stopped and as of now I'm only on modified bed rest, and we will re-evaluate after our Dr. appt tomorrow. Hopefully we can still make it to the end of July, but it's much more realistic to expect the middle of July at this point.

Same thing happened to me and I made it pretty much to full term.  I think I told you that the other day. Anyway, hang on and keep them in as long as possible. I was so thankful to have big babies that got to go right home from the hospital.  I am sure you are doing the best you can! Good Luck :)

  • You have more then enough already!  I had a few things on hand INCASE I needed them.  My girls were born at 6.8 and 6.14 and were too big for the preemie clothes I had!  Between blankets, burp cloths and baby clothes I do the twins laundry every 2-3 days max so you don't need TOO many since they will outgrow them fast.  My girls were out of NB size by 1 month old too!

  • That sounds like plenty to me, and don't count on them being small - you never know, I certainly didn't expect to have 7+ pounders!

We only had about 8 newborn sleepers, 2 Halo Swaddlers, a dozen newborn onesies and 2 pair of pants and we never 'ran out' of clean clothes for them. And they have pretty much outgrown all of it already and are in 0-3m.

  • Wow, that's a LOT more than I have for my guys, who are due in July.  I didn't buy any preemie clothes - I will send mom or DH out to buy some in case they do arrive early enough to need them.

  • I think you have enough preemie outfits... just do a lot of laundry (sorry but no need to buy more bc they grow so fast).  I had ZERO when boys were born, and they were rather large for preemies (6lbs ea).  But the newborn clothes was huge on them.  My mom went out and got them 2 sets of pjs, and a couple of longsleeve onesies and pants, and that was it.  I'd do laundry almost daily the first month, but by 3 wks I think they were in newborn already... and at 6 mo they are wearing 12 mo clothes!  They grow fast!
