My husband and I are moving to DC this summer and our baby is due in October. We currently have a midwife in New Mexico but now we need to find someone in the DC area who does home births. Any suggestions??
Congrats on your pregnancy and welcome to the area (soon)!
There are many wonderful midwives here. Unfortunately, there are not enough and they fill up quickly. You should begin contacting them as soon as possible.
In VA:
- Tammi McKinley, LM/CPM - www.novamidwife.org - Peggy Franklin, LM/CPM - www.birthbydesign.org - Marilee Pinkerton, LM/CPM - www.TLCbirth.com (though I hear she is no longer practicing midwifery and instead teaching) - BirthCare & Women's Health, CNMs - www.birthcare.org (collaborative practice of five CNMs with a free standing birth center - also do homebirths)
DC has no licensing permission for other than CNMs. Therefore, no CPMs legally practice in DC. However, many do anyway and get around this by having someone else present at the birth receive the baby (which bypasses the legal definition of the midwife's role), such as mom, dad or a birth assistant. So long as the midwife does not receive the baby, she has not practiced midwifery without a license. Other than the CNMs listed above, I am not familiar with any other HB MWs licensed to practice in DC.
I'm happy to provide you with my perspectives on each of the midwives I've listed above, as I know all but one personally. Feel free to email me at Lindsey AT SunflowersHealingandWellness DOT com.

I recommend Birth by Design midwives Peggy and Kim

I haven't had my baby yet, but I've been very happy so far with Birth by Design.
Yes, I have a blog and it's hilarious (except when it's not)
