Austin Babies

s/o of the bagle

Can someone answer a neverpushedanything10cmoutmyspecialarea girl's question?  So, the bagel thing got me thinking which of course led me to pull out my trusty ol' ruler which first caused my eyes to pop out of my head at the thought of my special area being THAT special but then caused me to think how in the world can a baby fit through that??  (Yes, go ahead Rssn aka Grammar Nazi - knock yourself out on that one!)  So really, how does a baby fit through just 10 cm?  I know this is probably an absolutely ridonkulous question but it just does not seem big enough.  Am I the only one that has ever wondered this?

  • It's stretchy Wink (and this comes from someone who's never pushed a baby out of her lady parts either. but this is what my OB told me)

So are you saying that it gets even more special than 10 cm of special? or that the baby is stretchy and can contort? Please say contort please say contort please say contort.

it is stretchy and Ds #2 head was 14cm so it has to stretch or tear to get him out.

  • The baby's skull isn't fused together.  That's what the soft spot is, the separation of the plates in the skull.  That's why some babies look like a conehead, because their head gets mushed together as it comes down the birth canal and out the bagel.  Their head is the biggest part, once the head is out, the doctor works the shoulders through and the rest just slips out like a greased pig :)

  • Yeah, the baby's head also smooshes a bit.  Cone head baby?

    Here's DSs cone head:

The bones in the skull aren't fused together yet and they go back to normal in just a few hours after birth.

So this brings up another question that I guess I need to ask my ob if I ever get pg.  There is a 50% chance of my baby having my disease (Crouzon's Syndrome) which causes the plates to fuse together in utero.  So if my baby does have Crouzon's I wonder if I will even be able to deliver vaginally?  I've never thought of that before.  hmmmm...
  • I have been avoiding thinking about this so far in my pregnancy - and now it is all I can think about!  Dangit.  LOL

They would probably monitor the size of the baby and induce before you went full term if it would be an issue.  Were there any issues when you were born?

hmm...that does raise a lot of questions.  First, would you want to know before the baby was born?  Can they tell, what kind of testing is needed?  Would a vaginal birth be more dangerous for the baby or for mom?  Interesting.

  • Could they do an amnio to diagnose the syndrome prior to birth?

yes.we will do a cvs test. in all honesty it if i am able to get pg it doesnt matter how that precious baby comes out or what syndrome it does or doesnt have just as long as its in my arms crying
  • But it does raise a lot of questions.
  • If you are able to know the baby has this syndrome from prenatal tests, I'm guessing a MFM or perinatalogist would help make the call if your baby could try exiting through the bagel or whether a planned C-section was the better option.

I'd be interested to know what your OB's answer to this question is.

  • I tore...and I think I would rather tear than have an episiotomy.  I begged my OB to let me tear rather than cutting me.

  • yep, if there's not room, the baby still manages to come out and it makes the next several weeks very uncomfortable.  i still cringe when i think about it.  but DSs head came out sideways so i tore both ways.  Indifferent

I had an episiotomy with Jakob and it really wasn't a big deal.  Two stitches and I was having sex three weeks later.

I'd take that any day over some of the tearing horror stories I hear!  :)

  • It happens somehow but I try not the think about it.

Would this be a good time for my "In my head 10cm looked like 10in story and I never really thought about how that couldn't possibly be true until I saw Knocked Up while I was pregnant and almost had an anxiety attack right there" story? No? Okay then. :)
