Austin Babies

airport security with a toddler (edited with another ?)

I'm planning on wearing DD through the airport (when she's not walking) in the Ergo.  I'm hoping to be able to wear her through the screeners instead of taking her in/out -- what are the odds that they'll let that happen?  I know a lot of you have had mixed experiences so I'm just curious.

ETA: If she has to go through the screener on her own, does that mean I have to take her shoes off too?

Also, I'm bringing snacks for DD that will include several veggie pouches.  I'm expecting them to be treated as a "gel" but have any of you had problems with gel/liquid-like kid snacks through security?  I would probably die if they made me throw everything away....

  • I'd say 50/50 on taking her out of the Ergo.  It seemed like the bigger my babies got, the more often I had to remove them going through security.

Snacks shouldn't be an issue at all.

  • No clue on the Ergo.  Trying to get DD into one would be like wrestling a wild animal. :)

On the food, no big deal.  I just take everything questionable out of the bag and put it through. They usually do a test on the sippy cups, but everything else they just let go through.

  • I was just there on Thursday and you had to remove everything. They asked me if I had a shirt on underneath my sweatshirt (I did, thankfully) - I had to take it off or submit to a pat down. No one was allowed through wearing a baby. The couple in front of us actually had to have dad walk through, mom pass baby through to dad, and then walk through herself. Security did seem much tighter than it normally does, but it could have been the fact that we were in a mad rush to get on our plane and I had no patience for anything.

If it's a gel, make sure it fits in a quart size baggie and you should be fine.

  • i traveled with my then 14 mo old this past February and I had to take him out of the Ergo to pass security.

eta: had to take his shoes off too! :)

mommy brain in effect...but I seem to remember I could still carry him through, I didn't have to hand him off to anyone (I was traveling solo with him), but they did want my Ergo to go through the scanning/x-ray/whatever equipment with the bags, etc.

Ditto this. Although, I didn't take any gel-type snacks.

    Have a FAB trip!!!

ETA: Yes, on the shoes. :/

  • I've flown with M at 2.5 months, 3.5 months and 5 months and all 3 times I had to take her out of the carrier (moby or mei tai) and carry her and put the carrier thru the scanner thing.  I also have to take off J's (2.5 years old) shoes.

    Yes.

Awesome.  Getting her shoes back on should be an adventure.  Maybe we'll just WT it up and let her run around barefoot.

  • I've always had to take her out of the Ergo and put it through the scanner. Her shoes have to come off and I usually just carry her through (she will NOT walk through on her own- she freaks every time).

The pouches count as baby food, which means they are not included in the gel/liquid rule. They've never given me an issue. I always have them out of the bag with her sippies and I let them know that I have milk and food for her.

  • if you can, make sure all of her food is separate so you can easily take it all out at once.  I remember a lady being held up (not at ABIA though) because she hadn't taken out a baby yogurt or something.  it was somewhere else in her bag so they had to search the entire thing.

re: shoes: do you have a pair for her that can easily be taken on/off?   I usually try to wear easy shoes if I can for myself, too.

Most of her shoes are easy on/off.  It's her allowing them to go back on her feet that is the problem.  Don't worry.  You'll understand in due time.  Stick out tongue

  • I saw a woman carry her toddler through the scanner with shoes on a few weeks ago at ABIA.  The security agents were really friendly.

When I was leaving SeaTac- totally different story. They were also doing the newer, slower scanner transition so I think that compounded everything.

I guess it really depends on which agent you get because ABIA was crazy strict the last time we flew compared to the airport in NOLA. They actually took C's Elmo doll after it had been through the x-ray scanner and ran a "special test" on him. You can imagine how much she loved it when they took him from her a 2nd time and we just had to stand there and wait. Fun times.

    Seriously?  That is ridic.

  • We always carry DS through the scanner and they always want his shoes off. I don't know about in the Ergo. Probably will make you take her out. Babyfood should be fine but you never know. Just make sure to set it aside and show it to them when you put it through the scanner.
