Babies: 0 - 3 Months

If your LO has a dairy sensitivity ... ?

How did you come to this conclusion?

Beware of lots of poop talk, here. Ha.

DD2 is on Zantac for what we thought was reflux. It seemed to help, but I have no idea honestly. It could be a million different reasons why she is less irritable now. Anyway, her stools have been rather green lately (vs the normal mustard yellow for a breastfed baby) and actually mucousy now, too. I mentioned this to her pedi (minus the mucous as I hadn't noticed that myself) at her 6wk visit last week. He wasn't concerned - said the fact that I was eating a lot of greens lately could be why, or maybe I am eating too many carbs (which I can't deny). Anyway, "Dr Google" says dark green mucousy stool can be an indication of milk allergy/sensitivity. Today I avoided milk all day (her poops became normal yellow) but then had a large glass with lunch - sure enough her next poop after I nursed her was dark green and mucousy. I am wondering now too if her reflux symptoms were actually a reaction to me drinking milk...

What has been your experience? I'd like to hit the grocery tomorrow to get soy milk (that's fine, right?) and non dairy creamer for my morning coffee to see if that makes a difference after a few days.

Re: If your LO has a dairy sensitivity ... ?

  • We are still working on determining if my daughter has an allergy/sensitivity to milk.  I've been told to avoid ALL dairy until our appt with a GI specialist, which is 3 weeks away.  The Dr said that it can take at least 7-10 days for the milk proteins to be completely gone from my milk.

Also, non dairy creamer isnt truly dairy free.  I made this mistake on my first day of being dairy free. There are still some form of milk proteins in it. It's actually surprising how many things that you would think are dairy free actually aren't, for example, McD's french fries.  Who knew?!

I had to do some research on dairy allergies to find out what I could and could not eat.  Be sure to read your labels. The allergy ingredients are listed after the actual list of ingredients in bold.  If it lists milk as one of the allergy ingredients, you should avoid it, or at least that's what I was told.

  • YES YES YES! DS would spit up all his feedings...and I mean everything. It was all over the place. The pedi wanted to put him on Zantac but I knew it wasnt reflux because he wasnt showing any other signs. I stopped dairy and we have not had one spit up since. We have the occasional normal tiny spit up after a feed but nothing huge like it use to be. Like PP said non-dairy cream arent always what they seem. READ your labels!  I would try smethig else other than soy milk. Apparently milk and soy sensitivities/allergies go together. Try coconut milk :) i like it A LOT better!!!

See what happens. It can take up to 3 weeks for the milk protein to be completely out of your system. Go to kellymom.com. She has lots of good info on that.  GL

  • my LO had green watery mucousy poops. they came out watery but when you saw them in the diaper b/c of the absorbency it just looks like stringy mucous. my pedi was concerned. he also had a weird rash just around the outside of his butthole. was increasingly more and more fussy. they checked his poop for blood and it was positive though I never saw any blood. they said it was a milk protein sensitivity, which is different than lactose. also that most kids with this are also intolerant of soy. the best choose per my pedi was to continue BF but avoid all dairy and soy until his is 9 months old. soy is in everything!!!! I have read conflicting info on the internet re: soy lechiten and soybean oils - which are the soy that are in everything. that they are safe, b/c they aren't soy protein..... but some say they aren't safe. for now I am avoiding everything. it took 12 days for his poop to become yellow again! and its still not seedy and quite watery, but less mucousy and not green! have to drop off another sample to be checked for blood today actually. I have saved tons of links/info but the best thing that helped me was the baby center dairy free moms group. I think I read like every single post on there!!! https://community.babycenter.com/groups/a2095745/dairy-free_moms?

reflux can def be from the dairy too. my LO doesn't have reflux though..

    good luck!!!!!!!

  • They tested DS2's poop last week at the doc and they said right away it showed up positive.  I was BFing and after many tears, decided that dairy-free just wasn't for me right now---- although I'm still pumping so I have the option though.  We are trying alimentum right now--but thinking it's not working b/c he's still fussy.

Here's the thing---- you need to read labels.  DS1 had severe food allergies early on and we had to avoid a ton, including dairy---you need to look for casein, whey, etc.  That stuff is in a ton that says "dairy free".  It sucks really.

With DS1 also we thought it was reflux--and maybe it was too--but once I had cut out dairy from my diet with him (BF'd)--- it made a difference.  Zantac never worked.  Nor did prevacid.
