First, the AW: (Although I'm sure I'm jinxing things) DD fell asleep on her own tonight for the first time! When I put her in the crib, she was quiet and yawning but wide-eyed. I turned on the mobile, left the room, and she fell asleep on her own after about 10 minutes without so much as a whimper.
Now the question: DD's mobile is one of those wind up music box things, and only stays on for 3-4 minutes. My pediatrician recommended the Tiny Love mobiles, but I'm not sure how long they play for. How long does your mobile play for, and would you recommend it?
Re: AW and a ? about mobiles
Your pediatrician recommended a mobile? That's interesting. If you're going to use one, think the shorter time the better. My personal goal/opinion is for my kids to associate their cribs with one thing, and one thing only, sleeping. It's not for playing. Not for being entertained. It's the place where you go where things are so damn boring, you have no choice but to fall asleep. I don't personally get tired when I watch brightly colored objects whirl around over my head =P. I do understand sound machines to help kids sleep but mobiles I just don't get. Many of them have to be removed when the baby learns to pull up and then you have to teach them to learn to sleep on their own without it all over again. Less than 4-6 months old, I wouldn't worry too much about creating associations but the less "help" you give a baby to sleep, the better they tend to sleep. Think about traveling for example or being at Grandma's house for the night. How can they fall asleep without their mobile, kwim?
A lot of nesties have the kind that kids can start themselves as they get older. Projects on the ceiling and stuff? Some have remotes! I think those can be useful because they don't have to be removed and it can be used as their own "self soothing" when they feel like they need it. Again, it's not the sleep method we went with but every child has different needs. Do what works for you and your kiddo.
