what type of car seat is your 3yr old in?

what type/brand of car seat is your 3yr old in? My son is 2.5 will be 3 in Sept- we are in a convertible evenflo that goes up to 100 pounds. I am thinking of getting a booster type car seat- any thoughts???

Re: what type of car seat is your 3yr old in?

  • DD1 is 2 1/2 and she is in a Combi Coccoro (convertible carseat).  It only goes to 40 pounds and 40 inches, but she hasn't even hit 30 lbs, so she will be in it for awhile.  DS2 just turned 4 today and he is in the Britax frontier, with the 5pt harness, he will stay in that until he is too big for the harness, and then we will change it to a high back booster.

Is there any reason that you are taking your DS out of the evenflo?  If it goes up to 100 pounds I'd just keep him in the seat he's in.

  • He seems really big for it- he weights 35 pounds and is 40 inches

If the seat goes to 100 pounds your DS is definitely good weight wise, what is the height requirement on the seat? (sorry, I'm not familiar with the evenflo seat).  Most seats use the seated height of the child, since it really doesn't matter how long their legs are.  I think the general tip is that their ears need to be below the top of the seat (but I'm not 100% sure).

  • My almost three year old is in a Graco MyRide 65 (rear-facing).

As long as your son hasn't outgrown his seat (forward-facing I presume) by height (meaning the tops of his ears are still below the top of the shell of his seat and his shoulder are below the top harness slots, not above them), I would leave him in his current seat. He is too young to be moved into a booster. He needs to stay in his -point harness until he is mature enough to stay perfectly positioned within the adult seat belt and three is not an age when that is typical of most children.

  • My 3 year old is in the Evenflo Triumph (so is my almost 2 year old).

I had posted on another board a while back about moving my son to a booster seat when he turned 3. People posted a lot of links (I wish I still had the thread) saying it was safer to keep your child in a 5 point harness for as long as possible, it is safer than just the seat belt alone at this age. I plan to keep my kids in the car seat until they outgrow the weight limits. It seems if the seat goes up to 100 pounds, he should fit ok in it at 35 pounds.

  • Both kids are in Britax Boulevards...we just switched DS to forward facing two weeks ago because he is inching towards the weight limit for rear facing and the crotch buckle needed to be moved to an "only forward facing" position (if that makes any sense)

We will keep them in the 5 point harness until they outgrow it - even if we need to get new seats.
